RE: FASTLOG. The file CONV99.ZIP that you can download at the Six Italia page (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/3217/index.html) allows to convert FASTLOG files into .dbf files, a standard format which is usually accepted for import by most log programs. 73

Don't know if this is of any help to those of you asking about the Y2K problem with Fastlog, but there is a file on the 'Six Italy' which appears to relate to this called 'conv99.zip'. There is some accompanying text but it's in Italian and I don't understand it except that it relates to converting files in Fastlog. Maybe usefull, maybe not. I don't use Fastlog but thought I'd pass this on. 73

Getting close to 52, I admit I may well have an "old" vision of the world and thus tend to be over-reactive. So, I cannot refrain from expressing my sorrow when reading messages publicly and broadly blaming people, like the one recently appearing on a Web bullettin and reportedly coming from Ivo ZS6AXT. And, believe me, not because that message addresses Italian hams (I am the first to recognize that our behaviour has a lot to be improved....), but simply because, to me, that is not the proper way to put things out: blame privately and praise openly, an old proverb. For Ivo: if that was just a private mail which was not meant to appear on the Web, please fully disregard this message and accept my apologies. 73

For the last couple of days we have beacons from ZD8 (quite rare othrwise), V51, 7Q, TR, ZS6 with big signals 'till late in the night and what is interesting, they are all audible at the same time. Usually the daily TEP was starting with 7Q, sometimes followed by ZS & V51 and then at around 20-21z by strong video from 3C and TR bcn. On rare ocasions the next one to come was ZD8. No QSO so far this season, no PY, no nothing! (well, 3C5I is in the log) Big frustration! Nice to hear the beacons though! Sorry for bandwith, just wanted to let you know of the happenings here. Does anybody know what is the status of the ZD8 station who was supposed to be QRV on SIX?

To Chris, M0BOP. To my understanding, under the new Italian rules the 50-MHz band is just another ham band, nothing special except for power limitations. Therefore, anyone having a CEPT license can use it. 50-MHz is considered here a VHF band, so any type of CEPT licence is OK. Portable operation is also allowed. Enjoy your staying here and the huge UK pile-ups!

There is an apparent Y2K problem with "Fastlog" program by OM Alberto I1XGR. So far I found only 3 interim solutions: 1. Never re-arrange by date (utility #8). Awkward if you insert contest logs at a latter date - keep a backup in any case. 2. Create a new set of files after year 2000. You have to add DXCC countries and squares etc., to get your scores. (bad) 3. Accept the fact that newer QSO’s will appear at the top. Looks untidy, it will look worse after you enter many new QSOs, and it will be a real problem if you plan to be active for over 100 years ! None of the above is a real solution and its a shame because "Fastlog" is an excellent program. Does anybody knows how to contact Alberto? I tried in the past with no success. Can we possibly get the code so we can patch it? Any ideas? 73

RE: DK5YA >> This will only happen if the flux on its way down is going to fall slowly !!. If the last solar rotation is going to be repeated nothing is going to happen. However it will be important to wait and see what the geomagnetic activity is going to do. Enhancement may occur due to a sudden impact/shock caused be a major flare or coronal whole. I found the list of most wanted Caribbean countries on 6 meters very interesting. What really surprised me is someone wanting to work a KG4, and not asking to work a CM , CO or T4 station in Cuba !!!! Should this survey mean that it is now worthless time spent listening to 6 meters noise here ? Are European . African . Middle East, Asian and Pacifica Basin stations operating on 6 meters already full of CM , CO and T4 QSL cards ??? My perception is that the survey is NOT REPRESENTATIVE of the interests of such many 6 meter operators , many of whom are going to see their first ever 50 mHz MUF via F2 !!! So... I think it would be interesting to clarify this... VERY FEW European, Asia-Pacific, African and Australian stations have worked Cuba on 6 meters... During the past cyles numbers 21 and 22... CO2KK was the ONLY cuban station active on 6 meters SSB with a beam antenna and 100 watts... CO2OJ joined me when the cycle 22 was going down pretty fast in 1994 !!! Thought I should make this clear, so the NEWCOMERS to 6 will appreciate they are hearing DX when they work CM, CO and T4 stations. 73 and DX on 6 with solar flux 188 today ! re: DXPEDITION QSL's--Been there also. Have patience people! It takes a lot of time, money and effort to pull off a large scale dxpedition. Sometimes the expeditioners , once home, must wait for cards to arrive from printers, especially if they are sponsored and not purchased. (pretty hard to whine too loudly about card delays when someone is giving them to you) Now, I have no knowledge about the e30 situation whatsoever, so I can't be specific, but likley some of those guys are still catching up on things they put on hold due to all the time spent planning the e30 stint, not to mention the time they were away from home. After having now done a couple mid-size expeditions, plus dozens of IOTA and grid hopping stints, I think I can fully appreciate why cards sometimes take 6 months or more to receive. PATIENCE! They didn't go to all that trouble, just so they could NOT send you cards, hi hi! Have fun in the meantime. - ve9aa/Mike

I would suggest that it's too soon to get excited about E30GA. Major DXpeditions make tens of thousands of QSOs, and print fancy colour cards these days. Two months is not unreasonable to clean up the database and print the cards. Another two months might be required to answer 20 000 letters or so in one's spare time. Relax for another month or two at least before you get the jitters!

Last posting to this page.. Ho hum. I can see you and I are again on a collision course with you Geoff (GJ4ICD) and Rex so I will keep all my opinions to myself. Trusting you will both follow suit. Why didnt you also post the comments by Adam VK3ALM and ZL3TIC who responded to my comments? Re the bandplan, the consortium you speak of could start with people complying with the VK band plan which clearly puts beacons on 52 Mhz in their correct place and we have at least 5 up there which are never heard. Gradually they are seeing sense and pulling them down, maybe the VK8 boys will do the same. Hobart is the next to come down to 50 Mhz from a useless 52.470. We are still in a land of free speech are we not and people are always telling me no one takes me seriously so why all the fuss? Just ignore it. Just treat me as the fool who stayed too long in Alaska trying to work EU over the pole. What ever was I thinking to pull a crazy stunt like that? Re the callsign to be used under Australian rules a portable station must sign portable. It is correct and legal to sign /4 on Thursday Island so VK8ZMA/B is not a legal callsign It has to be /4 under our rules of portable operation unless things have changed. Trivial maybe but the rules. Please correct me if I am in error here. Yes and you are correct in your assumption that if someone wants to put a beacon on 52.2 in Torres Strait and tell some EU stations to watch for it, who should question the sense of that? My sincere apologies Geoff and Rex and anyone else who got offended in the matter of the VK8ZMA beacon on Thursday Island. Adios VK3OT

re: cards via "K8EFS". A few years back I got a card (or two I just forget), via k8efs, no problems or delays. Think one of them was a cn8st card. (rare for me). I have heard others report some delays. (even the USA guys) Maybe you EU's should try sending through a VE or W station if you really need that card and can't work it agn. Ditto mail from VE-Cuba. They have a lot of mail go missing, so via VE is probably best for those guys. Good luck! Dave, G4HUP, Lehane, G8KMH and myself are providing the measurements facility at Sandown this year. We plan to provide a range of facilities including noise figure measurement, spectrum analysis, and network analysis up to 23cm. If you would like to have your favourite transverter or preamp checked for noise figure we will be pleased to measure it for you. Because we use an HP8970 system we cannot measure transceivers/receivers. Sorry! If you would like to avail yourself of this facility, please book in early as we expect to be kept busy most of the day and will therefore run a list, probably starting with 6m equipment. You can add your name to the list by e-mailing me with details of what you want measured. Just a few simple rules. Make sure you have suitable adaptors to N, BNC or SMA if you use any unusual connectors on your equipment. Make sure it doesn't require some unusual supply voltage. We can cater for anything up to about 30V at 2A. MAKE SURE IT'S IN A SCREENED BOX. Open construction preamps are notoriously difficult to measure accurately in an uncontrolled environment like Sandown. 15 minutes maximum per measurement. Don't expect to spend a hour tweaking your preamp for the ultimate nf. There are others in the queue! Finally (unless I think of something else) come say hello. Dave was one of the original group of 40 6m licenced ops in (was it?) 1982/82. I still have my 'special' card from cycle 19...... And, if you can forgive us, Dave and I designed the 'Meon'. Hi All, The ZS1 Six Metre Homepage now has a live Webcam on the main page as well as a "virtual tour" of the City. The ZS news is updated daily. The camera is located on top of the "Naspers" building close to Cape Town's Foreshore and has a view across the city bowl and Table Mountain updated in near real time. Click on the "Virtual Tour" to see more sights (more cameras located at the Waterfront, the Harbour, and at two of the most popular beaches). I am preparing a operators list with up-to-date direct QSL info and much more. This site seems to be becoming quite popular (more than we ever expected!). The main focus is to provide a perspective from our end of the Continent, but news is welcomed for the ZS news page from all over. Thanks to all who have helped to make this a success up to this point. Special tnx to ZS6PJS and ZS1EK to mention only two. The Url again: http://homepages.infoseek.com/~zr1ev/index.html . 73 de
