My Millenium clock says 0 days 0 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds so I will take it back to the shops today? It is 01/01/00 in either US or real world format. so Happy Y2K, the only bug was a bus ticket machine failed and no tickets were issued for bus rides in VK7 and VK5. Hope all you IT guys spend your overtime money wisely, when is next opportunity?? 29/02/00? I see K1SIX trying for first QSO of the year on 6M. All the aircraft grounded in VK was a bit of a buzz especially as we all fly on UTC not Aussie time so watch the telly at 1100am EASST 2400Z. The hostages are all free in Afghanistan as well as the CARE Aid worked in Yugoslavia. Happy Y2K see you on the magic band we hope.

Well, not much to report from here. Had VK TV in for first time last evening, and ZL2TY has heard me CQing on cw and Ive heard him CQing on SSB, but we couldnt make it a two way due to QSB/QRM ....not a hint of TE to SA, Alberto LU2EG confirms there have been no XE bcns hrd in LU recently, so at least Ive not been out when the band has been open...it can only get better. 73 and HNY to all (a day early) but its an 1hr drive to this web Cafe and only doing it once a week.

6RO de VK3OT sorry about the P29 you just have to shift qth I guess. Just joking. Re P29 OK Peter I have never seen a logging for him other thyan on 110 which could be just laziness in inserting the right frequency, but the loggings on prop log all show 110. Anyway its none of my business, all I know is I practice what I preach and never qso on 110 if I can avoid it or if it takes longer to inform a slow cw er to qsy up 5 or down 5. HY2K 73

Comments noted about VK3 to VK4 Scotty as they are 300 Km east of here hard to say much, also noted that ALL the qsos were on 110 with the p29 and at 5x9 what was stopping everyone qsying I mean it is only P29 right and he ALWAYS QSO's on 110 if you can believe the JA loggings. Apart from that my Y2K resolutuion is to avoid issues like above as all it does is get noses out of joint and we have been harping about it for 11 years or so and everyone still jumps on 110. As for EU dx and working on a dipole to my friends in G3 land, the contacts you had with VK3 will just have to do as I am unable to hear any signals outside of middle east it just hasn't made it this far south east and is unlilely to in the next 3 days 3 hours so see you next year everyone.

Later this year TZ6VV and TZ6YL will be going QRT permanently. Trish and I spent 6 weeks of vacation in the states in November and December. Part of that time was spent conferring with doctors and organizational leadership. All concur that it is no longer feasible for us to work in Mali because of health problems. Presently we are working with our co-workers to forge a smooth transition of work responsibility. Our target date for leaving Mali is April 1. I will make an attempt to stay as active as possible up to the time I take down the antennas. I'm going to work with Trish to make YL from TZ available as well. I have not heard from my manager, AA0GL, for some time and was not able to contact him in the states. Therefore all QSLs for TZ6VV and TZ6YL should go to KB0VV, 3850 Willomet Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76133. This is my address in the states on the FCC database. I will answer cards when I arrive in the states. I can still answer cards direct at BP 395, Segou, Mali, but anything after March 1 will probably not arrive before I leave. 73s, Larry TZ6VV

Re FSK and beacons, although probably not the definitive answer, FSK is useful when a beacon is located in or near other amateur 6m activity as the constant carrier has much less effect from the local QRM standpoint than a keyed A1 signal. This is particularly noticveable if the A1 signal is at all 'clicky' as used to be the case with the ZB2 beacon. Merry Xmas to all de Trev G3ZYY/ZB2HN

Cyprus beacon moved in freq? For the last few months no 5B4CY beacon here on 50.499 MHz. Therefore no prop to Med area - wrong, it's 1.7 kHz low in freq. Problem if you check condx by clicking across a bunch of memorised beacon freqs. Question: why is FSK used for beacon IDs?

Update data bases.. 1). During several multi-hop Sporadic-E openings since Dec 1 I have accurately measured the carrier frequencies of most NZ TV ch1 high and medium power txs : 45.239526 Mt Studholme (Cantebury), SI, 90 % certain* 45.239599 Te Aroha, NI, 100% certain 45.249975 probably Hedgehope, south of SI 45.249985 probably Kaukau (Wellington), south of NI 45.250081 unidentified (but in for >1 hour) 45.260048 Mt Murchison, north of SI, 90 % certain** 45.260362 probably Hikurangi, north of NI 45.260396 probably Whakapunake (Gisborne), NI NI = north island SI = south island * known to be about 100 Hz lower than Te Aroha (Todd Emslie, Sydney) ** the only high power tx listed on 45.2600; the other 8Ps are 45.2603 or 45.2604. Te Aroha is almost a frequency standard, being always within a Hz of 45.239599 . 45.260362 is either 361, 362 or 363. The two carriers reported earlier by me on 45.239622 and 45.260384 were in error, both being about 22 Hz too high and should have been 45.239600 and 45.260362. (This is due to the centre frequency of my narrow band CW filter changing from 380 to 360 Hz, at that time). The two main Australian ch0 txs are generally quite stable: RTQ0 is on 46.171665 (663 to 666) ABMN0 is on 46.240121 (120 to 122) [but on 21/12/99 ABMN0 was 9 Hz high.] (I have also measured a few NZ ch2s & ch3s and most Aust ch1s). 2). On 16 Dec, during an intense afternoon Sporadic-E plus F2 opening to the north, I noted strong C1/R1 vision and the usual bfo level carriers from (northern) Thailand on 48.239590 and 48.260376, and a new, weak carrier on 48.260454. Could this be a low power relay from Thailand's ITV, ch5, ch7 or ch11? Each of these Thai networks and ch3/ch9 has about 30 relay txs, or about 150 in total, so it is not unreasonable that there could be one more E2 tx in Thailand. A. Mann, Perth, Australia

The band improves daily. Third day in a row for hearing VE1YX, but this time made the QSO, for new continent/country/grid! VE1ZZ also worked - answered my first CQ - 59/59 at 1301. No W/K stations heard until 1600, with K1SIX at 519, plus very weak cw sigs from WA1??? and WA2B?? On each day the openings have started earlier and finished later, and signals have improved - SFI still rising. Wonder what tomorrow will bring? Im off to keep Andy (see below) G3SVD company and will be signing XE1/G0JHC for 3 weeks between December 22nd and Janaury 12th from grid DL70JK. Stations will be 100w (706II) and 3 ele beam. Where as XE1/G3SVD will be in Central Mexico, I'll be 600km west on the Pacific Coast. I hope to get the antenna on a roof top over looking the Ocean. The site will be good for N/S and VK/ZL Pacific. The path back to EU from this side of XE looks difficult at the best of times (which these certainly are not!), but I'll keep a watch on the video QRG's as possible indicators. Thanks to XE1NJ XE1/G3SVD XE1/SM0KAK and EA7KW for advice and help with licensing ...I dread to think how many phone calls and visits to the PTT they made on my behalf, thanks guys. Dear Eric, no offence taken. Yes I probably have worked pirates at some time. But when I KNOW they are pirates I don't, because it isn't a "new one" if DXCC or RSGB or whoever won't accept it for credit. I didn't pick on France for any real reason - it was the only one I could think of at the time where frequency restrictions have caused problems. But what I want, what everyone wants I hope, is for all countries to have a common 50MHz band, with easy CEPT working for visitors. If we encourage people to go to SV9, or EA8 or wherever it is when they don't have a permit just so WE can put some illegal rubbish in our logs, then it is ALL OF US who lose out when the authorities say "Those 50MHz operators are irresponsible and uncooperative, why should we give them the privileges they want?" Tell me, is it the pirates, those who work pirates, or those who DON'T work pirates who stop privileges being extended?

to Mike GU6AJEI don't desire to offend you, but is this the lack of propagation who motivates you ? or perhaps a French you does it have constricted during a QSO with a Japanese ? Thousand excuses for it ! you do you remind your first contact with France ? What was the frequency ? "Can import, it was a new one" you will tell me ! Or, a few years ago, what was the frequency of your first contact with Italy ? you do you remind ? are you irreproachable yourself ? Yes it is true ! it is because one has nothing to tell that it is necessary to hush ! Sincerely, I hope that the propagation is going to ascend and that the idle will have "others cats to whip " Eric

Good news from S92 (G3WOS)! Gary will be getting on 6 meters very soon, and will probably only work 6 meters until I leave. HF conditions here have just been terrible so I will probably try and finish my time on 6 until I leave. I have a 5 element 6-meter beam and my transceiver is in the mail headed this way. I should be on the air before Christmas. I will send you a follow-up email after I get up and running. Regards...S92AT & S92A, Gary

Jean-Paul received about 30 QSL before his departure to 5R8. 5R8EE and Jean-Paul had answered these 30 QSL The QSL with IRC or green stamps included, were posted in Madagascar 3 to 4 weeks ago. The QSL with French stamps on the envelope, were posted from the Reunion Island about 20 days ago. I hope you will quickly receive the 5R8EE card. 1° The call FR5EL is deleted since 1995. FR5EL is now 5R8EE. Don't send any QSL to the FR5EL address, they will never arrive. 2° The only procedure to be sure that the direct QSL to FR or 5R8 arrived, is this one: On the envelope WRITE ONLY: PO. BOX 87, 97832 LE TAMPON CEDEX, REUNION ISLAND, FRANCE (NEVER MADAGASCAR). NO CALLSIGN, NO NAME. 3° Infos about this strange procedure: The PO BOX 87 is the "Le Tampon Radio-Club" Po. Box Without the callsign or the name on the envelope, the postmen don't know who is the lettre addressee. They don't open the envelope and the $ are not stolen. 4° Send your QSL direct to any 5R8 Station, at the address above ONLY. Every two to three monthes, 5R8EE QSY into Reunion Island for his work. He takes the qsl in his parcel, and gives the cards to the 5R8 QSL manager. You have to wait of course a long time to get the 5R8 QSL, but it is the only sure way. The 5R8GJ QSL's are not yet printed. Jean-Paul will get the cards in a few days. He will answer all the QSL received as soon as possible. Be patient ! 73 Georges F8OP

Hey everyone, we are back in Germany. Sorry we missed ZS6 Wed night. We had dinner with S92AT (Gary Shirk) that night to talk about leaving the 6 meter antenna. Yes, we left the antenna and S92AT is going to put it up on a 90 foot tower hopefully in the next couple weeks. Only problem, he needs a 6 meter rig. So, how can we get him an inexpensive radio that we can ship to him? Any help is appreciated! Please e-mail me if you have any ideas/info. We are working on getting a webpage up and I will post the address once it is completed. Please QSL via DL5OBZ. Sorry to all those I missed during the few pileups. We were disappointed that we never worked more extensively into Europe and NOTHING from the States and Pacific. However, with S92AT showing interest in activating a more permanent 6 meter setup we ALL may still get a shot; even me :-). By the way, please let me know if there was anything we could have done better. Best of 73's, Matt (S92DX)
