28 Mhz improving daily. I have just erected a simple ground plane and promptly worked Peter VK4APG, also heard VK2 stations on liason frequency. The time was 2100z or 800am Queensland time 200pm here. The 10M band is improving daily on its own with no lower enhancements on 21 Mhz which is a sign I like to see. It could herald F2 from KL7 to Oceania in next 28 days. I am qsx 28.885 from 2100z until 0700z. The focussing effect on the VK KL7 path is very evident now that the sun has passed mid way.

Re:ZR1L & ZS1EK. Both are good friends of mine and When I speak to Chris I will find out what happened. I went to have a beer at his place recently and we were going through his old logs. He has kept them all on file. I am surprised as he is normally very conciencious when it comes to the QSL. I am sure he needs that contact confirmed as well. He lives about 2-3km from me, so maybe I'll make a turn at his place sometime. I think that our biggest problem (lack of openings) could be due to the limits we have as to the size of antenna arrays we can get away with. (It's not called "the Cape of Storms" for no reason ... HI HI) I want to construct a six-over-six Skeleton slot for my station as soon as I get the time. The gain figures look interesting and the mechanical construction looks like it could withstand the type of wind gusts we get here. The RSGB VHF/UHF handbook quotes round 12dbd ! The radiation angle looks lower than that of a single Yagi. Any suggestions? That will also be my antenna of choice when we are allowed on 70MHz soon. B.T.W. It is perfectly OK to start checking the EU-VK path. With fluxes above 140 or so the chances are increasing from the end of October to X-mas and chances are good up to mid March 1999 for the first serious slot. Important is to make noise on the calling frequencies. The 46.172 indicator is good but representing just a fraction of the VK4 area, as Steve has pointed out. Keep 28.885 for moral support (the feedback and knowledge that there is effort on 50 MHz).... There will be probably some listen, listen, listen -style applied .... but here one needs the call, call, call -line as well.... Good luck! To Shawn, ZR1EV. I can understand that you are very "GUNG-HO "for this new cycle, but I sure hope it will be much better than the previous one-as far as ZS1 is concerned. We had many many openings to ZS2,4,5,6,9 and V51 (ZS3), but only one (yes ONE) to ZS1. I worked ZS1EK (JF95) and ZR1L (JF96) (he never answered my QSL+SAE+$2) on the 13th of April 1990 and as far as I know that was an opening of 5 minutes.Well You never know, hi. hope to QSO you.

Sorry...ZS1FW is not active on 6M:(( There has been nothing heard here in ZS1 since 1992 except WEAK 48.250 Video. Well almost nothing. This afternoon, I heard a station on 50.110 sending INCREDIBLY slow CW. Couldn't copy anything that made sense so I made a Quick phone call to ZS6PJS on his Cellphone. Paul said he his pretty sure it could have been an F5 station well known for his slow morse. Well, the station faded into the mush after about 15min. I called and called, but no takers. Also no Beacons. I work/eat/watch TV etc within earshot of my radio every day, all day and would hear if the band opens ...HI. ZS1FW is Mr N.B. Futter,12 Faraday Way, Meadowridge, 7800, Republic of South Africa. I have not heard him active on ANY band and he is quite close to my QTH. Sorry to burst your bubble...HI. EU path. I cant imagine having the luxury of time to send an email response to Europe when I think I have an EU path. Sorry but I have no faith in noisy PC's logging events that are occuring on 50 Mhz and with 120 second windows who can wait 6 minutes to log a report or spend the money to stay on line. Either you EU guys take the VK lead or miss out. For some time now there has been a lack of belief in reports originating from VK about EU paths. There is a fatal belief that you need to hear 46.240 or 46.172 before you need to csll snd would point out again that those TV stations are far from many 6M operations. And even when we report EU TV no one believes it so whats the point. How about some good old fashioned operating skills and observations?

propagation reports. Tpday I started by working an M0 on 20 who was using a dipole then went to 15 and finally 10M where I was able to contact Moss VK7IK/3 at 2330z around 5x7. The VK2RSY 28.261 and VK5WI 28.260 beacons were audible at 539 using my old Create dipole up 50 feet. I think the F2 path across the Pacific is increasing in MUF. Try 50 Mhz oftena and listen for indicators. I am QRV from 2300z daily 28.885

Yesterday best opening in this area so far this season. Late aternoon produced many strong Med signals, OD to CN and north to JN65/95. Went QRT for an hour with heavy storm in area and when I came back an hour later only signal on band was TL5A loud, loud. An hour later he was still loud calling CQ with no ZS takers, they all gotten bored and gone off to watch TV or something. I went up to .115, called a few CQs and was called by TJ1GD, 57 on SSB both ways. Made my day!!! Hope we hear more Central & Northern Europe soon.

Neville, if you here the Eu-tv again it's better to input "http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/input2.html?" and check on the OH2AQ cluster "http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/50.html" and see what's happening. And do it as soon as the band opens, afterwards doesn't help. The openings that might occur between VK and Eu are most likely to be quite rare at this time of the cycle.

I concur with Nev VK2QF that the rapid acceleration of conditions could seee EU as early as October 10th. For those who have not perused the data base i suggest that we had EU conditions in VK as early as October 10th 1988 even though it took until dec 23rd 1988 to get any signals through. I am quite sure that we can open the band if we try. the windows are 0700z to 1200z and from Early October through early November then a window in december and again in February. The data base of EU to VK contacts should allow and extrapolation of expected windows, so lets not get caught napping. And what about this KL7 path, anyone have any ideas, i admit to being a little bemused by the propagation here or lack thereof, but am open to suggestions, as long as they are polite ones. Also off to Texas for a big texas steak next Saturday and to meet with some talented 6M people. 73 Steve

ZS6DN/B on 50.050 is off the air. May have been hit by lightning during storm last night or caretaker may have shut it down prior to storm and not powered back up yet. It is on a high site near Pretoria and very susceptible to strikes. There is an SSB voice beacon "ZS6AYE" operating continuously on 50.065 in Johannesburg. No info on power, antenna or whether it will be a permanent thing.

Just spoke to Gilbert,ZR1ADI on 50.150 and asked him to confirm the zero-beat frequency of the signal he was recieving. He said that it was spot on 48.249.8 and appeared out of the noise at about 12h00 UTC already with deep QSB and is up to S7 at the moment!14h40 UTC. We here in ZS1 are QRV to the North on 50.110 now. Hope to hear our first DX today for this cycle! Best regards

Things are starting to look promising here in ZS1. At about 16h30 UTC yesterday afternoon, ZR1ADI reported 48.250 video at about S4-S5 with strong, slow QSB, The signal disappearing at times. It faded into the noise at round 18h35 UTC and again reappeared at about 19h10 (weak). I have a really pathetic setup here on that QRG (Bearcat 220+1/4 wave vertical) and heard nothing. I did however hear carriers on 48.220/48.270 and 48.300 all very weak with slow QSB. Gilbert (ZR1ADI) has a 6-ele Yagi up and reports that he swung the beam a full 360deg and the signal was coming in from the North. I believe this report, as Commercial stations round 35-43MHz were "armchair copy" on the bearcat for most of the late afternoon here. Mostly Spanish and Italian, but also heard some French.I am going to program a commercial rig I have here to some of these frequencies and try to make a recording through my soundcard when I find the time. Maybe someone in EU can Identify these transmissions for us. Needless to say nothing was heard or worked on 50.110 :( Greetings from Cape Town (The sun is out again today)

PS. Lord Howe island VK9LNQ worked in to JA in the 2300z time slot the morning of 25th Australian time and peter VK4APG reported a JA8NAE QSO at 2114z which is only 714am EAST. Dont forget the DARN radar is on 49.640 Mhz a very loud buzz. And KTUU TV on 55.2406 at moment.

Sorry havent been around but no access until now. the past 48 hours have seen some very interesting propagation from a Pacific perspective including the contact between Steve KL7FZ Al KL7NO and a Canadian station at Lake St Paul via AU E;s. All HF bands have acted up since Wednesday and an unusual 20M path to VK only without any commercials or EU stations and total absorbtion on 40M without any stations at all including all the regio 2 commercials. We are trying to get large antenna erected at Steves place before the winter snows but time is running out for us. I have been up on 28.885 but only heard PY and LU stations when the W5's worked to SAmerica. Life at 62 North is not like life at 38 South so they keep telling me. Good propagation yesterday starting just after 1200 utc. Not too much EU activity but heard/worked CN8UN, CN8LI, OD5PN, SV5BYR plus a number of I, EH, 9A, 9H, SV, CT etc. stations, mostly Western Med. weak OZ and OH CW stations were reported heard, but no QSOs. 9G1BJ audible for one hour between 15.59 and 16.59 today - huge pile up from Italy. Managed to break through (tnx to I7ZPB). During some qsb nulls on 9G1BJ managed to contact Larry TZ6VV. Hi All. I'm VERY SURPRISED to note no openings between EU and ZS6 last night. The MUF was up to round 43MHz between ZS1 and EA and I with commercial traffic copied on my scanner and vertical.No 48.250/49.750 was heard. Some strong sigs (carriers with QSB) between 49.000 and 49.400 but no ID on any of them. So the band MUST have been open to somewhere last night.CQ's on 50.110 CW produced no takers. Today is a public holiday in ZS (Heratage Day)with many people putting in leave for Friday as well. So in case of band openings in this direction, you may well find high levels of activety for a weekday. Greetings from a cold and wet Cape Town.

Bruce ZD7VC told me last night he'd been on the phone to Johnny, ZD7WRG and confirmed he still has Hal's rig, the Icom 551. Johnny has agreed to pass it on and ZD7VC will go round and collect it over the next few days. Bruce plans on putting up a small wire quad or beam, depending on local resources which he'll check out. I've arranged to catch up with him in a few weeks to see what progress has been made. I suggested looking N/S 16-19z and maybe SA later.

We've already forgotten about reports (everybody is "59")and names (OM)now, if we are going to forget GRIDs, then why not go all the way; Forget 50MHz, Rigs, QSOs etc - you can get all the details on the WEB - go for DXCC there and leave 50MHz to those with a serious interest in RADIO. Received a tape yesterday from Peter, PY5CC. It contains recordings of his more recent pile-ups to Europe. Quite interesting! Its amazing how many stations, once Peter says, for example "XX go-ahead", then proceed to give a report, and their SIX figure grid (at least twice), but not their call!! It must be one in five. Lets ban grid squares during big openings, they are so easy to pick up via the cluster/internet afterwards. (sri for the screw-up below)

Does anyone know if there is a page on the internet where up-to-date TV-DX reports can be found. It is quite likely we will see some TV (for example A6) later this year, and it would be usefull if the pictures could be identified by the TV-DX professionals. A6 is an easy one, but last cycle lots of strange stuff showed on the screen, and a positive ID is better than just a general direction.

Spoke with Bruce ZD7VC last night on 15m. He's very keen about coming on 6m. Told him about the rig, Hal ZS6WB sent a few years ago and that ZD7WRG was the Custodian at the time. He is going to call at Johnny's today. He will try and first locate it, then see if parties are in agreement that he can set it up. Bruce is very active and should make a good 6m Op. I have a sked with him Wednesday for an update. Hope that puts Hal in the picture.

For Info: ZS1B/mm is QRV on 28.460 dayly when CONDX are OK on 10M. Bud was supposedly going to operate on 6M from ZD8 etc, but I have heard nothing about this so far. I try and hear if he has any operating schedules for 50MHz, but this is one time that I wish I had HF priveledges. Most of the QSO's on 10M are to ZS1 (he appears to be homesick...HI).I will try to get a ZS op here locally to ask him abt 6M. I have tried a few local guys, but they seem to forget to ask him or simply won't. Yesterday he (ZS1B/mm) said that he was about 1000 miles West of ZD8 with VERY STRONG signals into ZS1/2 on 28.460. I feel that chances are not good working him, as I get the impression that he is more concerned with working pileups on HF than "messing around" on six metres. Pity really. Great opening to ZS6 after 16.00 UTC, but no beacon heard except ZS6DN (not special). Highlight of the evening was a qso with V51KC (finally...). Jack was complaining about his qsling ability due to many qsls never being received, specially those in envelopes containing IRC's or $ (any similarity with EK6AD is unintentional...). I heard at 50.070 a beeper signal pulsing the noise , QTF 170-180 degrees , and at same time , many ZS6, Z21, V51 ( kg34,kg33,kg49,kh52, jg88 ) stations were 59+ into JM78 calling CQ contest. Looks like the 3DA0 operation annouced a month or so ago has fallen through. If anyone talks to someone in 3DA0, C9, 7P8 or any other rare countries in the region I have a spare IC505 that I will make available. Think C9 would be the rarest of the lot. I sent an Icom 551 to St. Helena about three years ago but to best of my knowledge it hasn't been used. It was sent to Johnny who was on the ship sailing between Capetown & the UK. If someone works ZD7 please try to find out if someone there can get that on the air. Will try to stir up more activity down here. Very low ZS activity so far.

I had a long conversation with Eugeni EK6AD on the telephone, as Dennis said earlier, his English is not that good! However, I did get him to understand that he would receive a parcel with many QSL cards and $20US in it (don't tell DHL!) by Wednesday or Thursday. He also told me that the zip code everyone was using was wrong and it should be 375106 i.e. "Eugeni I. Kurgin ul. Tamanceneri 18-56, 375106 Yerevan, Armenia". I said I would call him at the end of the week to check that it had arrived OK (though we should know this from the live DHL Internet tracking service). He apologised for the post! He also said I was in the log (phew!) and that we would get the cards back within ten days. Chris

Hi Tony and others...I am curious to hear who was worked in ZS2! If you managed to find someone to talk to there you are lucky! I still have to have a confirmed contact to our neighbors in ZS2.Been trying since 1982. Logged the ZS2SIX/b beacon on 50.005 1000's of times. Those guys are rare DX. By the way, Also interested to learn more about the reception of the ZS1SES/b beacon on 50.070 (?) as spotted on the OH cluster. That beacon is QRT. I should know. It is here in my workshop. It will be installed at the Cape Technicon (Cape Town CBD) or maybe on Du Toit's Kloof (Paarl) soon I'm told. I will go along to help with the installation when the time comes. The frequency of that beacon is in any case 50.080 (FSK). I will let everyone know when it is operational again. Been straining to hear anything on the band last night, but not a squeak:( Earlier in the afternoon I heard some ZS6 on ms on 50.200 SSB but not much else, apart from lots of local (ZS1) QSO's on 50.150 up to about 17h15 UTC. I have been listening on 50.200 this morning since 03h00 UTC but nothing heard from ZS6. CONDX seem poor on ms. Hard to judge when both the ZS6 beacons are pointing North and well away from ZS1! I expect condx between ZS1 and ZS6 to improve round 06h00 UTC (8'o'clock local time) best 73

It may pay to watch toward ZS this weekend. There will be a VHF/UHF contest in progress, and it is expected that there will be high levels of activety from the ZS4/ZS5/ZS6 area. It is the SARL VHF/UHF contest which starts at 10h00 UTC on Saturday 19th and ends at 10h00 UTC on Sunday the 20th. Contest rules are available from the SARL homepage at: http:/www.sarl.org.za. Look out around 50.150/50.200 and 50.250. These frequencies have all been popular in the past.50.450 and 51.400 are popular NBFM frequencies. I do not have any indication from local ZS1 ops that any of them are planning to participate at this time, although in the unlikely event of an opening this far South,the centre of activety for ZS1 is around 50.150 (SSB)and many stations monitor there. I know that ZR1TRD,ZR1ADI,ZS1PDT,ZR1AC,ZS1NAZ etc. normally chat there. The ZS2SIX/b on 50.005 is in operation and is very LOUD here on ms. More updates later(if any...HI)73

Six was open again last night to Med with OD5, 5B4, LZ, SV, YO, I worked by several ZS6s. Good sigs from Europe but not much activity. Med stations (& further north if Es about) watch for us 1600-1800 utc peak period, sometimes also earlier & later. We are all looking forward to the opening further north as most of us still need OK and OM.

Have had 48.250 MHz video the last few evenings but little else. However propagation is improving and regular openings should start in the next few days. Note that two 50 MHz /mm station are on the prowl and should be passing through areas where we will have the opportunity to work some TEP wet squares. Would appreciate it if someone in Europe could find out their schedules so we know roughly when and where to look for them. Thanks.

Hi all, while drifting off to sleep last night, was distracted by a fairly bright glow coming from the wall. Further investigation revealed the source as a qsl card from UT1PA for a 6m contact in June. Curious, I placed the card close to the light for a few minutes.. after charging, the blooming thing was generating enough light to read by! UT1PA isn't near Chernobyl is he??? 73.Jim

Re cluster spots/joker: Denis et al: One of the big problems now starting to arise is these new packet to Internet links, the ident is hard to prove but one main joker spotting is IK8DYD, whom we have known abt for years what his game was. Sadly there are other ways that people can hide their identity by using other callsigns and spotting silly spots. It is to say the least, VERY annoying and un-controlable!

Just leaving Seoul after very interesting visit with HL1LTC, he is the one to work here and has very good station. I gave him beam directions and told him about E2 TV. Well, the second week of September has started and 6 has quieted down in C-Europe. The good news is that that was expected, so nothing new. The solar flux has been gradually descending, which is good aswell. Now let's hope it'll clime again and than drop like it is doing now. In about 3 weeks from now the first ZS6, or about, opening should hit the more central parts of Europe (IO,JO,KO) at about 1300 to 1500 UTC (depending where you are located). If nothing happens at all, it may take another 3 to 4 weeks before we get another shot. However, until December there could be F2. In December, January and February very little can be expected this early in the cycle. Especially February could be pathetic due to the lack of ES. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.

OK OK OK - I've been innundated with EK requests from all over the place. No more please! I need card, reply envelope, $5 here by FRIDAY next week latest from those that have e-mailed me. I will get DHL to pick up the packet from my house on Saturday. Any cards not received by then will not be sent. Any extra cash left over will go to UKSMG funds. Just to add to the EK6 QSL story, i sent $1 and 1 IRC, i put them in my return envelope, then in my out going envelope with my QSL. I also cut off one corner of that envelope to indicate that there wasn't any cash inside. Perhaps that's why mine got through?? While i am on, what is the score with HA on 6m? is it legal or not? RSGB just refused it for their countries/squares award. Cheers for now.

EK6AD : Finally the right telephone number. So just spoke to Eugene Kurgin ,EK6AD. He was very happy to hear something from Europa as the band has been very bad in EK the last couple of weeks and he was supprised to hear that we in Europa already have been working PY ,LU a.s.o. When electricity is available ( sometimes only 1 hour a day ) he is monitoring 6m regularly. Eugene is working with only 10W output into a small antenna ( don't know how small ) and DX70 ( ALinco ). The hot matter : QSL ???? He told me that he ALWAYS reply's qsl's...he just send out another ten cards by mail recently.The cards simply do not arrive at his side due to postal problems. He don't want to send the 6m log to DK3WG but wants to handle 6m QSL's by hisself. My QSL did also not arrive (yet) as many others. He could NOt tell me if DHL would work,he never heard of DHL. So two suggestions from my side now ... keep on sending cards till it does arrive or maybe trying the DHL service with a big package of cards. Off course I asked him to send me his QSL to me.......hi.

EK6AD : Just spoke to DK3WG, QSL manager for EME QSO's for EK6AD.He told me that the two known adresses ( both pobox and home adres ) are OK. But the post is a big mess... Jurgen never had contact with him on telephone ,only on 20m or by mail.He has many unwritten cards for EK6AD but just needs the Log for 6m. Also checked out my telephone number but seems it does not exist enymore.... Peter, your offer is very kind. Please put G0JHC and G3SYC on your list. If the project gets off the ground, count us two in. I have spoken with international directory enquiries and he is NOT listed as having a phone, so I guess this is the same for fax/email. I Spoke to the EK Embassy in London, the chap was very helful, but basically said the Post Office is in a complete mess and they only use DHL (thats how I got onto that route) I have recently contacted the "American University" in Yerevan, they have a home page, with emails for staff/students. I targeted the physics dept and sent a request off for anyone who could find his address and possibly deliver mail (if they had a safer route via the Uni), I got 3 replies suggesting they would help, but they all never replied again once I elaborated on the story. Guess they thought I was a wierdo eh? (no comments pse) ..So you can say I have done a bit of work on this one. What really gets me is the fact that the chappy (Hi Andy GD0TEP) who tailended my QSO (EK6AD answered my CQ) got his QSL back so quickly! ..as already said, there is just no pattern to it! I've posted this to all, as I think it offers some useful background info to all.

DHL run to Yerevan, and for $30 give a 100% delivery. The weight limit would allow a box of QSL's to be sent. EK6AD seems very good at a return QSL, once he gets yours. Didn't hear SV9SIX beacon during this year's sporadic-E season at all. The only beacon from SV9 is on 50521, which can be heard often in JN58sp. No CW-id, only a carrier is transmitted.

Missing the equinox period is not that bad in the regions of the equator, but you can miss a lot of TEP to EU, when living in A22, C9, V51, Z21, ZD9, 7Q7 and similar latitudes. I do not mean that the whole zone around the geomagnetic equator should be depleted due to holidays, but if you would ask, people would never let you go. Peter: It was probably not 3C TV that you heard. The TV started up for the day with a raspy test pattern at 1440Z yesterday, so it could not have been 3C TV at 1415Z. I was monitoring 110 at that time and heard nothing. Sunday was very quiet with 3 qsos only(PA,SV,EH) and it was very similar for Alain TR8CA. Now, which TV was it?? 3C is zero beat on USB at 48.2504.

Between 1415GMT and 1445GMT I had 3C video up to S9+ here in IO90 but no activity except for CT1HB at 57 and CT beacons up to 559 . Did anyone else hear the video? It was the loudest i have heard it and despite several CQs no contacts or stations heard in Africa.

New 4 L yagi really paid off today... In about 24 hrs after putting it up I managed to work ZS6EZ/PJS, 7Q7RM, Z21KA (on my CQ!) plus 4X1IF and OD5SX and bunch of Ukrainian stations. Also heard ZS6AXT, A22BW and V51KC but couldn't get through due to my lack of knowing German and having more power. Fantastic opening from my point of view and some better times to come. P.S.-Goran, I just had a look. It's not "quite" as bad as I had first thought for the losses of a 50MHz signal in 25m of RG58/U. About 3dB. Still, bad enough! GL getting the yagi up in the air. I am sure that will help quite a bit. Maybe one of the 9a1a gang or someone can get you at least some RG8 or better stuff. To Goran/9a2oo. I know it may not be possible, but if you can you should attempt to find better coax cable. I don't think your "problem" is your antenna. You are losing a big chunk of signal in your coax! I understand good stuff may be hard to find, so GL with some hardline, or at least rg213 or rg 214. Well, managed to contact ZS6EZ at 16.52 in SSB - he wasn't the strongest ZS at the moment but he managed to dig me out from the local qrm. Some 5 Khz higher there was ZS6XJ who was much stronger, but no luck with him. ZS6AXT was heard around in CW, but he didn't copy me in spite of several QRZ'a and unanswered CQ's. Running here 10 W into a HF9V through 25 m of RG58, but 4L yagi is definitely couming up asap. 73 Gogo

Good opening to 7Q7RM last night at around 1800 - 1900 UTC. Even after the fighting died down the 7Q7SIX beacon was still audible in IO90 till late on around 2030.

Sun noise very obvious this morning at 2100z bursts and pulses as it rose here at QF02. I think the Paicifc path is going to occur early this year possibly first or second week in November. Need some contingency plans for KL7. Take a note of my phone number 1 970 373 5435. Sunrise is 1400z approx and sunset 0200z on 21st September. I think my maths is right. It is 6 hours ahead of East coast VK and is on AKDSTime at moment. Please dont call before 6am or after 1000pm AKDST OK? I will monitor the 48 Mhz TV from Europe and have the frequency list. Beacons Im not so sure about. Lets hope for a chance between September and December. VK path will be 0000z to 0130z just before my sunset in Wasilla. Location is 850 feet asl and take off to Pacific is good. I will be assembling one of the JHV specials that I am taking back to VK for friends, after I come back from Austin on October 15th and wont be around from 3rd to 15th of October. In my opinion the JHV special is the best lightweight gain for boom length antenna cyurrently available and is a good compromise between the might of the 11 el lesser antenna and it points well by all reports. 73 and see you from Wasilla in a week or so.

Eritrea E31DX. This DX pedition will be by the Space A DX pedition Group with a few selected other operators also. We will have 10-12 operators, tooperate 3 stations, 24 hours a day. The tentative plans are for November 3rd until November 18th 1998. Doing this near the Equinox will give us the best world wide coverage on all bands from 160-10m, and maybe even 6m. Solar flux peaked well over 170 yesterday. Too much is not good either as with the 300+ fluxes of the past cycle it was as if we had a big leaky resistor over the CAP: no 50 MHz condx whatsoever, not even high MUF's.... Agree mainly with PA3EUI's comments... In fact the local season is much more important than the absolute flux figure.. We still have the wintertime anomaly with higher MUF's in local winter at lower solar height and shorter daylight duration. The tropics are different and the geomagnetic equator has an outspoken local effect..... My personal opinion is that we are best off with a Sun that has a low activity side and a high activity side.... With the memory effect in the ionosphere over at least a few days, it is quite different to have a flux of 160 on the upslope or 160 on the downslope of the flux, and we would get to see it every 28 days......Let's see how our "study book" turns out this time.... We'd burn our fingers (and more) if we would try to tune it up...... Good luck!.... Zaba OH1ZAA/OHoMZA.....

Been holding thumbs for some signs of life this far South this evening. (ZS6PJS *has to rub salt in the wounds* by 'phoning me up and letting me listen to the band from ZS6!) I still believe that we will see an early EU to ZS1 opening when the band is open between EU and V5. Pse beam due South when you copy V51VHF @59+ and call on 50.110 or 50.150 SSB/CW. By the way, IF and WHEN the band opens up to ZS1 to allow FM contacts, 51.400 is still very popular here with 50.450 also monitored at times. The reason I mention this is that we have about +/- 60 active 6M ops here in ZS1 and you can easily double the count if you recon the FM "crowd". This will really make their day to hear DX on FM ;-} 73

Looking at last cycle's statistics we could be in for some nice propagation the coming weeks. When the flux starts to drop (not plunge) and if the geomagnetic activity stays moderate (active) the first more northern F2 could appear. However, at the time we seem to be fully dependent to the E-layer activity, and that is (statistically) bad in the next 2 weeks. In all last cycle only few ES-openings were detected the first 2 weeks of september. However, if there is ES now, it should be detected, and if detected, we should profit more from it's possibilities. My guess is that things (F2) in C-Eu should start the last week of september or the first of october. Don't forget to look (and listen) east. VK-LA/OH came out of the blue (last cycle), with few signs in advance. A multi-hop of low-MUF F2 reflections can occur. BY/UA/A6-tv doesn't has to show-up in advance of a VK-opening.

To Shawn, ZR1EV and others. You are hearing the third harmonic of the South African Navy transmitter ZRQ which operates on 16.694.2, and is listed as being located somewhere in the Capetown area. This is a standard maritime CW channel marker and indicates the station is QRX on the bands delimited by the "stroke" sign. Could be a good propagation indicator. Regards.

Anyone has any info on a transmission on round about 50.8975? I get it into JF96ic beaming North. It sends ZRQ2/4/H/6 etc etc over and over at about 20wpm CW and is weak with rapid flutter QSB. I hear it for hours on end during the day. At night it fades away. Can anyone clear up this mystery for me? 73

Between 1990-1991, we had the pleasure, to work a lot of stations from ZS moreover V51, A22, 3DA and the former ZS9 on Six. Therefore, many years ago -in Mai 1991-, I could apply for the "Southern-Africa-Six-Metre-Award" to the VHF-Awards-Committee, S.A.R.L., Pretoria with all requested details. But no reply, no information and - no award...! I know, a few other 6m-operators are waiting, too. Can anybody clear the situation?
