9A8A reported strong OH1SIX signals tonight but no other activity. My OHoMZA/5 expedition noted nighttime Aurora August 28/29 in KP41, but no other signals. I am already back in OH2, but no have station here. Despite sunny forecasts: a weekend with pouring rain. Lake- swimming was the rescue (16 C waters)......next time better luck! ....

According the message from ZS6AXT at GJ4ICD's page I am fully agree DX should'nt operate other than CW below .110. I wonder what CW operators experience, but we in Holland often have SSB stations call on top of CW stations. Very unpleasant when it is one of those weak, distance record, DX stations. CU on 6, 73-

Worked TZ6VV for #154 yesterday. PY5CC booming, PP5WL up to S9. PP5JD much weaker and only for 5 minutes good copy. Stations >25 km.south did much better. Funny to see that it's still magic that's going on at SIX. Does QSL to TZ6VV via BP395, Segou, Mali work? 73,'s

Am looking for any additional 48 MHz TV locations/offsets in the Near East that might not be listed on Geoff's website. We hear many stations that are probably east of OD, but are probably low power and thus not on the regular list. Signals from them are loud on the TEP path and would be good indicators if we knew exactly where they are located. Perhaps some of you in your travels have picked up additional info. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Yesterday's DX in JN58sp: 1626z TZ6VV, 1924z LU3EMK, 1941z PY5CC and PP5WL. ONLY HEARD! No QSOs. Congrats to the PA's, they seem to live in an ideal place for sporadic-E extended F2 paths. One good thing: TZ6VV came in on a Tropo-extended F2-path, so, we'll watch the game the next days...

Hi, Re M2, I use an 11 el at home (VK3OT) and a 9 el at beacon site (VK3SIX). I am going to buy two N5JHV M2 specials at 30 feet long with almost as much gain. reason, strain on rotors and 9 el doesn;t point as well as 52 foot 11 el. You need a rotor at least equal to big Kenpro or Daiwa for 9 and Emotator 1200fxx for 11 (its 52 feet long). I think the 7 el JHV will provide a good compromise without sacraficing gain or directivity, and didnt I just see it feature in the 10,300 kM QSO;s?

Hello I am thinking of building or buying a 2 wl 6m antenna.I like the idea of M2 but I need something quickly.I have not seen any designs for antennas of this length for 6m.Has anyone built anything? I was thinking of building a DL6WU but there maybe something better.At 12m long I think I will probably need 75 mm square or round tubing in the center and 50 mm at the ends.I would also be interested in peoples experiences with elements. I will buy an M2 if anyone can get one to me within 10 days or so,I will have the tower up by then.Any info would be appreciated. Yours very keen and quite mad Conrad G0RUZ

First opening form TZ to PA ever.. Just received log from Larry... He wrkd 9 PA stations during tonight's opening including the first for PE1MCD ( congrats Kees ). Others in the log, PE1OOY , PA2VST , PE1PZS , PA3BFM , PE1LCH , PA0HIP and PB0ALN. There's one in the log with an incomplete call. most likely it was PB0ANX (But PB0AN in log ). Only a 20 mins opening but in the afternoon Larry wrkd 100+ I , 9H ,SV1 and S5 stations. Larry monitors 6m every evening (when at home)

Nice evening.... first TZ6VV then PY5CC , PP5WL and PP5JD in PA... And really nice to hear many PA stations working them AGAIN !!! Really nice guy's....59 for the ..th (fill in nr ) time this year... ...much stronger than last time ( a week ago ). Grow up. let others work the DX as well with less 'big' stations. Also more fun to the DX instead of working the same PA's ( not only ) over and over again... Next I'll get sick I gues when I hear them gain...

News from ZS. Hi Tony, Nice opening again today. Will you do me a favour please - ask the I stations not to operate SSB below 50,110, we work there only CW. Same for the African stations, like 7Q7RM, Z22JE etc, ask them please in our name same thing. Another opening today, unfortunately only to S. Eu started at 1525 with 9H1BT and scores of stations were worked from I, EH1, IS0, 4Z, F, EH3, EH5, SV, S5, YU etc. by quite a few ZS6 active. Band closed after 1915. I would like again to ask stations, including 7Q7RM - PLEASE, when on SSB, operate only above 50,110, you are not really giving chance to CW stations to work. Otherwise the ZS6 stations were nicely spread, so that there was a minimum of local QRM. Look for us, CW freaks, below 50,110 ! Weak CW gets better through than SSB . 73, Ivo

A pulse is showing on the magnetometers at ~1830 UTC and is also shown on the Boulder charts (http://www.sel.bldrdoc.gov/today.html). It was just a minor flare (C4), but must have been direct straight at earth.This could have enhanced condx between PY2>LZ and ZD8>GJ.

Re:Explanation from G4MJS. At the start of the last cycle, before I worked my first ZS station, I had to make hours of fruitless calls whilst louder stations to the South of me worked the same ZS stations repeatedly. The most frequent excuse given for working the same DX station within a short period was "Just letting you know you are still being heard," the second most frequent was "You're up to 5&9 now" and the third was, "Did you get my qsl card?" Let's show some originality this cycle and instead of these tired old cliches, let's invent some really good excuses. I suggest that the UK Six Metre Group awards a prize for the most original reason for working a DX station for the second time. (PS Sorry Peter. Not getting at you. Actually, I have done the same as you did more than once!)

Re me working TZ6VV twice - the clip on the WWW site was after at least 30 s of 'CQ no takers' from TZ6VV, and was intended purely to let the DX station know that he was still being heard here and should continue calling. ZL3TIC reported au conditions on ZL and VK TV at 0400z on 27th. Nothing at VK3SIX site until 0700z when 46.240 became 5(AA off 135 degrees. Called but no qso;s. Heard VK7GUN at 1100z work VK3YY then all faded out. Nothing today on 28 or 50 Mhz so far. But listening anyway. QRV KL7 in 14 days.

Well, the Aurora came, and sure hasn't finished yet. Don't give up now, it'll open in 2 hours again. The shockwave produced a moderate ZS6-Eu opening, but you got to bear in mind that it has to arrive at just the perfect time to really open the band. Last cycle ZS4/6,V5,7Q and Z2 were in via aurora for over an hour at up to s7 signals. So if you here the African stations via Spread-F (TEP), it's always worth the try to swing your beam at the auroral belt and see if you can work them like that aswell. Thust me, it's a kick !

Aurora ALERT on DK0WCY (10144 kHz).Looking at the magnetometers nothing substatial has arrived yet. The ones in JA-land are down at the moment, so little can be seen there. North-south propagation in PA on 28 MHz was normal, so there seems to be no enhancement yet.

If I may make a suggestion here. The next time that the V51VHF beacon is heard very strongly in Europe, try pointing your beam toward ZS1 and give a call on 50.110 or therabouts. We also monitor 50.150. I have on a number of occasions heard ms-like bursts on 50.110 when the band was open EuV5 . Once when the band was really wide open between V5 and ZS1, I managed to work CN8ST. Signals were weak, but workable. I normally hear absolutely nothing when the band is open EuZS6! Of couse, Every time the band opens to V5 I also call CQ on 50.110 beaming Eu. Noted on Steve's comments on the cluster. On a number of occasions when things were "happening" on 6M, I was unable to get into the OH cluster, and wasted valueable time trying to connect to submit a spot, and lost out on possible contacts. 73

Hi All, Had a short opening to V5 early evening last night. I had a customer here with me in the workshop when we started hearing the V51VHF/b on 50.0185 just in the noise at about 1630 UTC. I switched off both my PC's to reduce the QRM and the signal reached S9+ about a minute later. After he left, I started tuning around the band for other signals. My beam was pointing North at the time, and when I swung the beam around toward V5 the signal from the beacon reached the endstop on my S meter. I the heard ZR1ADI calling CQ V5 on 50.150. My PA is still out of action, so I did'nt even try to call. I suggested he tries on 50.110. No takers. beacon faded at about 1653 UT with no stations worked. No sign of any other beacons. He also tried 50.200. 73

Re clusters: For once and for all: Who has got time to work the rare dx openings, drop the key and go to the PC to type in cluster information. If you rely on clusters or packet radio you will read about what just happened, not about what is about to happen. Most of us in VK use dial up networking as we are not as sophisticated as the Northern hemisphere so we rely on our 6M wits and initiative we don't use DX crutches like clusters as the absolute authority we only use them to support our search for dx. Those who rely on clusters are going to be sadly let down. 73

I'm in Gibraltar on business. Tonight I took my 706mkII to the Gibraltar ARS Meeting and there on a dipole we sat listening to a dead band except for Py5CC calling CQ on SSB and CW on .110 (1930z for 30 mins)virtually no takers! Unfortunately I only had a 5A power unit with me so could only run abt 10w - so Peter didn't hear me. Hope to be around tomorrow with a bit more power!!!! 73 Peter ZB0/G8BCG

3C TV may be down for several weeks! The dirt track up to the peak is washed out, so no fuel for power generation. So 3C TV on 48.2504 is not going to work as a DX opening guide for a while. Look for me on 110 or 105 (no beacon mode at the moment)

1sts LAW of DXCLUSTERS: The quantity of spots reported in the Packetcluster is allways oposite to the quality of the propagation. tonight again proved the rightness of this, as soon as PY5CC appeared on the band our cluster stoped and all links were gone.. Before it did report all "non dx spots" without any problem.

ZD8VHF beacon was into 3C last night at S5 from 1830-2015 for the first time for months. But no PYs etc. It also helped that the local TV was down - ran out of fuel again for the generators!

Great stream of TZ6VV on UKSMG site. GREAT example of working DX TWICE whilst others are trying to get in for the first time. Just because the DX keeps calling CQ or QRZ it DOES NOT mean that no-one else is hearing / is calling him!!!!! (He was a very good signal here too - I was satisfied with having him in the log once.)

When putting something on the DX-cluster, could you please fill the DX's locator FIRST into the comment-field. This would help keeping the 6m-QRA-database up-to-date. I'm now using G0CUZ's excellent logging and cluster-software which collects the 50MHz-spots. I would prefer: 'DX 50150 UN7AX LN53->JN58; 599'. The logging-software extracts UN7AX's 'LN53' and puts it automatically to the database. How about that? Many thanks for your help! 73's... Weird propagation this afternoon. Most of the time very fluttery, Auroral-E like, R1 on 49.739 and 49.749. Direction mainly east. Also massive bursts lasting for many minutes on these carriers. In between LA video 48.239, also like a jojo. No aurora, so what is happening?

Yes! Certainly agree also with Dennis etc: I've hrd PY5CC several times this year but only wkd him once, same with the LU's, but there's a couple of Lids that still continue to repeatedly work the dx and stuff other stations that need the dx! Have a listen on 80mts! it happens there also!

I have to agree with G8BCG in his comment about the "big guns" joining the pile-ups to work the same DX time after time. Please give the little guys a chance! This isn't a personal winge - I can run 400W to a reasonable antenna - I usually get through but there are a lot of people with modest set-ups who cannot compete with the old guard working PY5CC for the 20th time....73's Denis.

That was an pleasant experience tonight. I thought the RX was bad because I have heard nothing for a couple of days. I heard a bit of noise on the band at 1913Z, called CQ and boom the skies fell open. It was quite a pileup moving from I west across to GW before it went out an hour later. 60 plus QSOs, 11 countries and 35 grid squares. Quite amazing how localised the propagation was to TZ6VV this evening. Heard bursts of SSB from 1945 and up he came to s5 at 1955. He was working stations in different Euro countries without a hint of a real pile up. Even when he was S8 with me there was no G pile up. I last heard him calling CQ at 2015. SOME INFO:- Many people have asked me about why there is no beacon operational in ZS1... Without going into a lengthy retoric, I have suggested that they monitor 50.500. This frequency is used for AX25 1200bps forwarding between all the Packet PBBS's in the ZS1 call area. Most stations run about 45W with the exception of ZS0STB who runs 15W. There have been reports of these stations being heard via ms in ZS6 (abt 1500km). Until we manage to get the ZS1SES/b beacon on 50,080 operational again, this will have to do. By the way, we have great plans for this beacon . What I can say is that it will be QRV at the same time the 4M (70MHz) goes up. I will keep you all posted on the latest developments. One other thing ... I've had some queries as to my QSL adress. It is (should be) correct in the CALLBOOK. If you don't have it, here it is : PO BOX 212, Brackenfell, 7561, Republic of South Africa.

Re UA9SIX: Explanation on GJ4ICD pages, basically: Operation was special event on 50.188 only, located in Orsk LO91 confirmed by ES1CW. Orsk is located East of the Asian border, there's a detailed map showing this on the pages, the River Ural splits Eu with Asia. :-)

Worked UA9SIX too, but I am not so sure about the continent. LO91 can be both Europe and Asia as the river Ural runs straight through this square. Moreover, the UA9S callsign block is assigned to zone 16 which obviously is Europe ... Those who know more details about this Russian surprise please share your knowledge with us. Sorry to those I missed. I'm running 1500 watts and have bad powerline noise today in direction of Europe. Worked the following: G4CCZ, G3WOS, G0PQO, ON4KST, ON4GG, G3ZSS, G3FPQ, G3HBR, GOLCS and G0SKR. I heard DL7AV breifly calling me but gone in a few seconds. Oh Damn!!! In the middle of a ms SKED the PA went BLAM and the end of my weekend. Blew the PSU, my plate current meter and one of my output tubes (Tripped the house's mains in the process) Been working on the amp for the last few hours to try and get it working again. Major blow-up :( So now I am only QRV on 2.5W PEP till I get up and running again. Hardly any point using the TX at that output power! Wish me luck! The report of the G beacon reception last night was probably false alarm. The operator who reported reception recorded the beacon and when he played it back later found it was actually 7Q7SIX, probably via a short Es opening. ZS6PJS and myself were both monitoring at that time and heard only weak 48.250 video, but I did not tune at bottom end of the 50 MHz band for beacons.

Willem, I noticed from the UK6mG journal and web pages that you are now using an ICOM IC746 on 6m. I am thinking of changing my IC575A to either an IC746 or an FT920. I would be grateful if you could email me with any comments or advice you can give me regarding the performance of the IC746 on 6m. I am looking for a CPU chip for a Yaesu FT680R transciever. No luck here locally. Could someone point me in the right direction , or maybe has one from a "scrap" tranciever? It would appear as if the Chip is damaged as there is no display. All else on the PLL control PCB checks out and all voltages present. The cpu clock is running and a scope on the signals to the PLL reveals pulses as the tuning knob is rotated. The display itself is working (can manually light the segments. No multiplex signals to the display. The HT to the display is high, but seems to be due to no segments that are lit up. Am I correct in assuming a faulty CPU chip? best 73 and mny tnx in advance

Earlier this evening I had a good copy on the V51VHF beacon, so I go to the dx portion of the band and call 'cq dx' and'cq AF' on cw. I then had a mini pile-up of stations from southern and central EUROPE I have no wish to cross swords with fellow 6m ops but it is extremely frustrating when this happens. It may be commonplace for stations at these more southerly latitudes to hear and work stations in southern Africa, at least going by the cluster reports in the last few weeks it has been a very regular occurrence, but please remember that those of us in the more northerly parts of Europe don't have the privelege of this type of prop. very often. Indeed, the sigs from the V5 beacon were the first 6m signals I have EVER heard from south of the equator.Please listen and respect the wishes of the calling station. I wonder if these stations would welcome a call from me if they were hearing beacons in North America and calling "cq USA". I don't think so.

Hi... Noticed some DX spots on the OH cluster abt. the V51VHF/b beacon into EU @ 5/9 . Next time this happens, keep listening on 50.110. I've been calling there like crazy after seeing the spots. There is a peculiar "duct" of some sort up to about Oranjemund from ZS1 and on a few occasions, I have managed to work S-EU while the band was open to V5. On the subject of contacting V5... Share my (our) frustration. We often have band openings to V5 and I have 'phoned almost everyone there to try to get them up on the band (my poor phone bill ;-(( ) From ZS these are International call rates ! You may try V51DM (Derek) or V51E (Kosie). I've found them to be the most responsive. You guys in EU are really making us N.Easterners of NA drool as we watch all the juicy DX you work. Have not worked ANY F-layer since Jan '92!!!!! (worked cx6dh a few months ago on Multi-Es to F-linkup tho). I hate to see some of you crying hard times when you miss a week w/o any AF/SA/AS DX. Some of us are STILL waiting! I can only imagine it must be worse for the VK boys, though at least they have the odd JA/BV opening to whet the 6m whistle. I noticed that someone on the Italian cluster was asking whether Sid, ST2SA, was a slim - the answer is NO! I have been excahnging e-mails with him (his address is on the UKSMG site) since last year after he met with Ezzat, SU1ER in Cairo. He was keen to get on 6m so I am pleased that he now is! Gday from sunny 22 degrees Perth indian ocean coast. On 8-8-98 we had 57.250 tv from vk5 port pirie at about 1300? miles or so at 0705 at s9 for about 10 minutes, probably Es..no hams heard despite calls cheers graham in OF77XX in the sunshine.

ZS operators are here - the propagation is not extending this far south yet. Have heard weak 48.250 & .260 video the last couple of days, but only for a few minutes and nothing heard on Six. Our season should be starting soon, so keep your beams pointed south. Optimum times 1330-1500 and 1630-1800 utc. Most of us down here still need OK, OM, SP, SV5, Z3, T7 and others that are new on 6 since last cycle so when Med stations hear us calling them please give us a break. Re TF Television on E3. I have been in contact with TV people in TF and they only list an E4 Tx on 62.250 MHZ at 300 KW on 24 hours per day. It would seem that the E3 Tx has been QRT some years. Nuff said - anybody disagree with this please E mail me and I will give them the E mail of my contact.73

Hi.. Anyone still active in V5? Have had plenty openings to V5 (V51VHF on 50.0185). Calls on 50.110 / 50.150 / 50.200 ... no results Also waiting for a single QSL card from V5. I think that I have now worked everyone I knew of that were active on 50MHz ... no more greenstamps left, used all my IRC's .. still no cards! What's up? By the way .. no QSL from CN8ST ... or TL8MB (did it ever reach you Erik?) Also need to confirm SV! Worked many SV's - No QSL's? - why? Just spoke to ZS6PJS on the LL. He reports 48.250 video into KG46 right NOW! He has to QRT unfortunately, but Hal, ZS6WB is listening on 50.110 for any stations in EU. No sign of propagation here this far South at this time in JF96 :( I will be monitoring 50.110 for signs of life during the night. 73

Amazing is weak an expression to use about last night. The band opened about 17:30z with strong SM1 and SM2, Then OH came in from way up north of the polar circle, down to Helsinki. We also got EW, ES, UA and later on UY, YO, and YU, and of cause I. Reported by other OZ stations, but not heard by me were PA, OE, HB9 and ON. Total yield for me was about 25 QSOs and 11 new squares. When I closed shop around 21:30z it was still going strong to I. By far the most widespread ES in Europe from OZ this season - and I had just come to the belief that it was all over for 1998! 73s and good DX de OZ1PIF, Peter 10 Grids, 200+ Squares, and 29 DXCCs and counting

I also heard what I beleive was the ve8by beacon. It was on the correct frequency but was extremely weak and was gone after a minute or so. It was around the same time SM station reported it. I've heard this beacon 4 times this year and have still to get a ve8 qso.73

A great opening last night - worked 5 new squares in Ukraine region . Heard EK6AD calling cq at 2022 GMT but unable to make a qso yet again due in part to a station calling who has already had a qso with him . Oh well that's life I suppose.........73

Amazing opening from here on six last night, US5CCO (KN59), UY5QZ (KN77) and UT2IZ (KN88) all big signals in IO81. It's very rare to hear signals that far East via Es from here.

Jari, OH1XT in KP01, just reported the VE8BY-beacon RST 559 at 23.53 UTC on 50.049 ..... He did some frantic calling on 50.110, but no results this time. ..... Today's aurora hit the K9 mark and produces a lot of Aurora contacts for the QRP stations as well. The North Atlantic path regularly opens during these magnetic disturbances.... Further to Steve VK3OT's comments regarding the Eu~Vk path, I am ready to work that path now, nearest indicator is 46.24 video and I can be contacted on +61 2 63738624 or fax (preferred) +61 2 63738611. My loc is "0 dx" to most of Eu so is unique and a little more difficult than northern VK areas. Best dx for cycle 22 to Eu was CU3/N6AMG at 19,251km, (a VK record at the time), so it's a long way. Is it true, does the Cycle 23 curve appear to be steeping up? If so we can expect similar conditions to 1988 and maybe get similar paths to Europe which hopefully this time will be exploited and not overlooked. Guys if I can make a polite suggestion to pay attention to the Pacific region from October 1st onwards to Feb 28th. Maybe TV indicators will be first clue, and please lets exchange a few phone numbers and pin them up on the wall dont rely on this medium as it will be found lacking...

TZ6VV arrived back in Mali on July 28. I will drive up to Mali on July 30. Hope to have the R5 up immediately. Within a week I hope to add the six meter beam. By the end of August I will have the Butternut vertical (including 30-80m) up and hopefully the Gladiator for 160 meter. I have a Force 12 beam and new rotor that will arrive later in the fall. Rigs will include a Kenwood TS450S, ICOM IC 735 and IC 720, and an Alinco DX70TH. We plan to initially be active on SSB and CW, but will try to add digital later, Larry /TZ6VV PS de PA3GML: beam donated by UKSMG, TNX!!

3C5 TV again out of commission from 1930Z Aug 2nd. Instead of mainly listening, I will be using the beacon or CQ if that continues (The TV TX is at the top of the volcano at 10.000ft and requires diesel to trucked up a washed out dirt road about 10 miles long. This is a tough job in wet season particularly when there is no maintenance on the dirt track!) Looking for Middle East and Sth America.

Here is the report of the opening from G - others are inaccurate. I have been recieving / working Alan today from 08:01 till now 09:05 - still in very weak on .105. At 09:13 no signal. He has been mainly 3.1.9 to 5.2.9 but peaking 5.6.9. at best around 08:35. A couple of points. 1 nothing else heard on 28 up except that just before 08:00 I heard the ZS1 beacons on 28 with a weak EA5. Nothing on TV at all but some MS. 2 His signals remained very constant - started weak as I described and very very slowly got stronger to peak as described and then very gently went down - no qsb at all in the normal way of description. As a lot of you know I have been an advocate for a very long time based on many years of observing of 2 separate modes of propagation in the E layer. 1) the spectactular Sporadic E and 2) the ordinary E layer. Today was a prime example of the latter - OR WAS IT!!! - F layer???? 3 Again based on many years of observation I noticed (this was most easiest observed on 144 mhz ) that openings started and ended just before or just after the hour - no idea why or how this illogical event can occur - but it does and again today it did!!. 4 to argue against my own point above, this time frame, if I remember correctly, is when we worked a lot of QSO's (from G ) to 6W, EL, 9L, etc - needs more checking. Just as I finish this at around 09:26 I am now hearing the ZS6 beacon on 28 - coincidence?

I have been receiving the CN8LI Beacon from 22:35 to 23:20 on July 31. The sig was 419 to 539. I can not find this beacon listed. Does anybody have any infomation on the beacon. The beacon Freq. is 50.027.5. I began hearing the beacon just after working EH7KW.
