regarding IK0FTA's V51-TEP report seen on Geoff's/gj4icd's FB page. I was reminded only a few days ago by V51GB on 15m ssb(who is not a 6m nut) that in Windhoek (or closeby I think) they have a 2m freq they all monitor (145.650Mhz) and it is linked to 6m ! Gerd wasn't sure of the 6m freq, but thought it may have been close to the v51vhf/b freq, or perhaps 50.110. He says a good number of guys talk on 145.650 in and around Namibia, so there is little excuse for not making a 2-way with guys down there if you are hearing the v51/b ! I am not sure about the freq. I will leave it to you EU/AF's to dredge up that info, but get on it! I don't know how many more reports I can take of guys hearing that ol beacon, but not making QSO's. -MIKE

Thanks to SV1EN and the Italian boys for the data base updates. Please send all further updates direct to Eric VK5LP (vk5lp@ozemail.com.au) who is waiting to add VK5BC and VK5KK logs. I also got an abusive phone call from VK7GUN who accused me of bignoting and stated that the data base isnt worth the paper its written on without his contacts so Eric is chasing them up. In the mean time I have spent enough time on it and want to take the apportunity of thanking Chris G3WOS and Geoff GJ4ICD for inspiring me to build it up and to all the European contributions. I sadly cant say the same about my own apathetic countrymen, however the data base should be a useful research tool when and if the cycle starts. Did anyone see the map in the JA1VOK pages in Mobile ham. Gee'ze it is a long way from the bottom to the top, and we really are at the bottom. Still if you can make an 8000 km QSO at the bottom like in January what will happen on the way up???? See you there or be square.

I wonder if anyone out there has compared the IC-575H vs. the TS-60S? I would like to hear from you. I also would be glad to hear what your opinion of each of these radios is regardless of whether you might have done a comparison. I recently purchased a TS-60S but really have not had a chance to check it out yet. Thanks for reading this and taking the time to reply. 73, Steve EM55 & FL16.

Has anyone modified the Kenwood TS-690S to improve the audio on 6m? It's fine at 50W but reducing power below 25W introduces distortion (I think this is common to many early 690s). I've got a copy of Kenwood's service technical report E51-92-038, which recommends changing the inductor in the IF unit from 100uH to 10uH with a low internal resistance. This, however, changes the 8V line, which is used as reference for the S and ALC meter, so these must be re-aligned - can anyone point me in the right direction to do this re-alignment, or send me a copy of the service manual?

Could we please have the exact frequencies of Dumyat Egypt, the Lebanese and any other relevant Middle East ASfrican TV video thanks. We have had that region for hours at a time and never been sure if it was the areas mentioned. I feel it is time to publish and update a Middle Eastern 48 Mhz RF list with also all the known African TV Video as well. Unknows are Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and African states.

Finally i finisched my home brew 6 mtr.Amplifier using a 4CX600JB.But...my existing High Voltage supply is not capable of delevering the necessary 2800V/600mA. I have been looking everywhere in the Netherlands to find a High voltage transformer capable of delevering 2200V/1 Amp. Can someone tell me where to buy such a transformer???Or mayby someone has it unused and wants to sell it. Many thanks in advance. Ps. 0600z TVTEP today 49.750 minus into QF12. 48.250 into VK1. JA1,2,3,4,9,0, into VK4 QH30 briefly, VK4 QG62 for half an hour and VK6 briefly. It can only get better and better. Stay alert. 28.885 was u/s no signals to alert anyone. Steve PS Henk PA2HJS has analysed the signals and states that they were bouncing off the Ural Mountains. It sort of makes sense, how can a signal proceed after hitting a huge lump pf dirt? Far fetched? Maybe we dont know as much as we think about paths. eg. Why cant you talk on 28.885 to Europe when it is open on 6? So dont count on using 28.885 to alert people, cos it will be too late.

not heard Steve's recording referred to in the notice below click here. This was Steve's original description: "The VK3LK tape is unique in that I captured the F2 backscatter path and the direct path (80 km side on) and you can hear the frequency shift. he is NOT sending FSK or MCW and after the opening the signal was clean. What is the path distance to produce such an audio shift?" Steve's database can be found here. Please be patient because this is a LARGE file and I have built in search capabilities, so it may be a bit slow. At the weekend I will upload a down-loadable (?) Excel spreadsheet version.

The final draft has been sent to VK5LP for any late VK5 additions and Chris has my master which is now 275 Kbytes or 2200 contacts in size. I hope you all appreciate the work that has gone into this, mistakes excepted, It has helped me find at least two incomplete calls by comparing dates and times. 8/2/92 0810z 2xcw PA3DOL and 0816z 2xcw PA0JMH. Dont have the grids though. As for radios and rigs. I still use my TS670 fitted with a WB6NMT preamp designed by N6CA and it goes like a rocket. Take a listen to the Real Audio file on VK3LK, henk calculated that the backscatter was coming from the region of the Ural mountains and was stronger than VK3LK who was just 85 km from me. The same radio was EME capable. I dont know why you guys want all the bells and whistles, you have got to hear them if you want to work them. A TS660/TS670 with 18 db preamp kills an FT650/TS680 by at least 3db. It also has a noise blanker that works transparently on top of signals which arrive at MINUS 140 dbm. 73 Steve PS Where are the sunspots??

Posted on the vhf reflector. From: Self To: wp4o@caribe.net, vhf@w6yx.stanford.edu Subject: ic-756 results /ic-736 problems Date sent: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 14:25:32 -0400 I second that motion! I use an ic-736 presently and am not entirely happy with it for the following reasons and want to know if the 756 is any better. Anyone using the 756/736 is invited to send their thoughts to me and/or the list please. Top 10 grudges against the 736: (in RANDOM order) 1.\miniscule controls for vox delay etc reccessed on back panel under coax cables (who's idea was this-a no coder ELF?) 2.\crappy antenna tuner on 50Mhz 3.\CW on LSB-arrgh, hw mni crossmode DX contacts have I missed? 4.\No rx from 30-45Mhz, but we have rx up to 60Mhz! (who thought this one up? I would gladly give up 52.5-60Mhz for some spectrum down BELOW 6m band. 5./WOOSH-WOOSH noise from (power supply?) most prevelant on 6m Hard to do any 6m work that's really weak. 6./Not compatible with my HEIL mic. 7./Terrible in high RF enviroments like CQww, CQ160m CW, etc. 8./Choice of only CW filter-NO ssb one 9./No 12vdc operation-yet the 737 does-go figure!! 10./PRICE ! After taxes, shipping, and 250Hz cw filter it cost me $3036.18 (and that doesn't include the two times I have sent it away to VE7 for repairs (once my fault-once Icoms') Overall it's not a terrible rig, although I think for the price Icom could have done better. No XVTR output, No second Rx, and on and on. I would like to know who ICOM consults for designing these things! Would be nice to see them poll the 6m crowd once in a while to see (for example) if we had any interest in signals between 30-45 Mhz instead of 50-60Mhz. I don't think I'll ever look between 53-50Mhz for anything other than the odd TV carrier on 55.250 if I am bored. If anyone has any proven mods for any of the problems I have listed I would be happy to hear them. I have seen a few ic-736 reviews and am not entirely in agreement. My old n' tired FT-102 and HB(ve1alq) transverter had more features (except 30-50Mhz RX) than my 3Kb '736. Maybe I should get a DEM and FT-1000MP, at least that way I'd HAVE a good radio. kh8/n5ols possibility of some 6m activity................ Steve, FYI, for you guys down under. I don't know if you still need KH8 on 6m or not (doubt it), but I have been talking to kh8/n5ols who is very active on 160m, and other "DC" bands, and he thinks there may be a chance he'll take his 6m rig to KH8 with him after DAYTON, Ohio hamfest. I think this is in April/May sometime. He has an older Yaseu or something and a 200w amp and a small beam. He tells me no one is presently active from kh8 that he knows of. Thought you might like to know ! Maybe if he gets a few emails of encouragement, he'll haul the stuff back to KH8 after he leaves Texas for his next stint. He was quite active from Texas a couple years ago, and has 2 more years on American Samoa. MIKE/ve9aa p.s.-Don's email address is: "Don Barclay" REmember, don't just click on my email address-----send DON a nice encouraging email regarding his possibility of including 6m gear that he already owns in Texas for the remainder of his trip. Don't scare him away guys ! MIKE

The good news is Tim V73AT will be back on Kwajelein atoll after March 25th. I am on 28.885 as often as I am in the shack. Also try 21.205 around 0500z. We have to build up the interest again, it takes time. And I predict just like in 1988 that dx will be missed because of inaction, inactivity and apathy. But then not everyone is as freeko about 6M as I am. The frequencies quoted in the last VK4 to JA opening are encouraging, and people are moving off 50.110. Lets hope the trend continues. You can call CQ on 50.2 here and get a QSO now, which is great. Don't forget about the early warning frequencies though. A 100 Kw TV station beats a 10 watt beacon hands down, so watch for 46.172 and 46.240 video. Forget about the sound, by the time you get the 50 Mhz sound you have amateurs as well. Dont forget ten meter beacons too, remember that 10 acts like 6 at this stage in events and provides an early indication of a rising MUF. I worked KH6 on 29.600 last week, so there is some F2 going on and 50 minus 30 equals 20 megs to go Hi!!

28.885 Mhz.........Where are you?.......... Is there any activity on 28.885 in Europe at all? There is many a day we (in the NE of NA) could be working each other on BS (those with a beam an amp anyway), or we could be working Carribean and SA at certain times of the day. Heck, on 1/3 of the days in June/July we could be working the whole Western portion of Europe (ok, maybe less than 1/3, but closer to 1/4), Y E T , I have worked very few guys on 28.885 in the past year or two. We are on the upswing guys and gals (at leat I hope so), so dust off those monobanders, converted CB's, and all that and let's start promoting 6m again and liasoning on 28.885. Really miss all those "live action reports" and who is working what with who, when, and how many times. CU on '885. Mike/ve9aa UKSMG #886 (darn, missed it by one number .... ..

Hello friends in the UK. In Feb. of 1993, the FCC made it possible for me to obtain David's call. I am proud to carry his call letters that has been heard around the world. David felt privileged to have been a member of the UK group And I know how honored he would be if he knew how well he has been remembered by his fellow "Hams". I would enjoy hearing from anyone in the UK that talked to him on 6 meters. By the way I am his wife. Ex- N8PYO. I may have talked to some of you myself. Thank you for honoring my loved one.
