June 2002

It's great to see that many are working Jimmy and the CY9 crew! At least some places are experiencing good prop right now. It's still way too quiet out here in KH6 islands--nothing for over a month, not even the dependable HC8 beacon has been in... However, while reading W3EP's 50 Mhz column in the October, 2000 issue of QST I see that there were strong multi-hop openings from KH6 to the US mainland on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd days of July, 2000. Like history, the Magic Band is prone to repeat itself and I will be especially alert the next few days... (and qsx 2m & up for NA west coast tropo, too!)

Heard Jimmy FS/W6JKV briefly after 18z, wkd @ 1929Z about 3 milliseconds before I was walking out the door. Nabbed CY9DH a couple hours later just after they fired up. 50.157, QSX UP 5. Both QSO's on a totally otherwise dead band. CY9 was tropo, but Jimmy seems to 'open' the band wherever he goes. Really makes you stop and think just how often we could be working certain parts of the world, if only well equipped stations were there and active, doesn't it? Hmmmmm :-)

Hmm...isn´t it time for the UKSMG to lay the foundation for "The UKSMG Achievement Award" for ops that have contributed a lot to our hobby, one way or the other? Shudn´t be too hard to find at least 5 sub-categories for this award - DXpeditioneers, technical achievements, propagation studies, ITU/IARU promotion of 6m licensing (lobbyism), fair operation and and - what´s your idea, group? Personally, I can easily find many examples of people that really deserve an award like this... Think it over. Nice idea? Maybe let the entire 6m community - also non-members - vote for their nominees? :-) Cheers /Rick

Not has much changed. QSLs is there nothing else!. Isnt propagation now more importent. Lets look at the moment and report bcns on the cluster. They will have far more value to propagation studies than an outdated requesr for a qsl card. What I am asking is to spot beacons. FT920 problem: Lucijan, it can be anything. But probably the PLL circuit doesn't lock. If you can, check oscillator, or VFO signal, with counter, analyser or other RX. Guess like all other ham equipment there is a protection circuit to avoid transmitting during lost PLL lock. Maybe you can find that circuitry. Good luck,

Hello for all 6 m hams! I have problem with FT920: seems like it can go on TX. After going ON display indicated frequency with flashing numbers. You can hear only internal noise , DSP work, and no S and power indications on display(RX not fuctional). On push it is indicates TRANSMIT but there is no TX 12 V internal signal even no on processor pin! What’s going on. Hi all. I finish my activity as EI3VXB/P (IO55SA) tomorrow morning. As it has been rather quiet for the last few days I would like to try some random SSB MS to get a few final contacts. I will be on 50.235 MHz from 06.30z tomorrow (Saturday 15th), SSB, 30 second periods and I will transmit first. I will beam about 120 degrees. If anyone wants to let me know they will be QRV please text me on 07855 483740 - not sure if you need a +44 (UK) or +353 (EI) prefix but I'm sure you will work it out. Once(and for all) again about the C3 issue: two years ago I visited C31HK, Fred. When I visited C3 in the summer, i just picked him out of the phonebook and rang him up. I already hat his address of a qso and qsl card from him on 6mtr. He was surprised to hear a Dutch fellow amateur on the phone so nearby and he invited me into his home. We hat a nice chat that afternoon, together with his wife. But he never showed me his shack: "big mess" he said. When I tried to obtain 2 cards for fellow Dutch amateurs, he wasn't even thinking of writing them out. He told me that in all these amateur radio years, he collected more than enough cards and he lost interest in collecting and sending them. Don't forget fred is above 60, but still going strong...hi. So to be honest, we better stop sending fred those cards and concentrate to contact the other C3, which is sometimes active on 6mtr. I know, I have easy talk because I have already the card, but I just want to explain the situation. GD DX and CUL on 6.

Peter, do a DX-summit search on 3A calls and you will note a grand total of 4 different calls active during all of 2002 on any band. There aren't too many of them in the first place. 3A2MW was in June 12th on cw around 50096, and seemed to get around 6 spots on the cluster. GL !

hi all, i see that thing regarding qsl cards from c3 has raised its head again, well the way i see it is if a station has no intention of sending a qsl card then please say so in the qso, i spent time in a pile up to get this guy ? for a new country but what annoyed me most was the fact i sent off twice for a card thinking maybe the first one got lost ?, and no reply, both were covered by return travel costs for a card, another scottish station did receive his own card back unopened "return to sender" i should have been so lucky i lost my irc's, i did try sendig an email and it landed at its destination ok but as you may have guessed i got no response, its now pretty obvious to me that this man wants to be left alone, he has made it plain that he cant or wont be bothered with qsl cards ,its now time to respect his wishes? .. if you need or want a qsl card then dont sit in a pile up for a qso with him, but if you just want to chat and pass the time of day then get in the pileup, maybe now we can put the whole C3 saga behind us all and get on with some real radio stuff, 6m band quite slow to get started this year im gm"" boo hoo ...best 73 all ray

One interesting feature on the FT920 is its DSP filter, however as pointed out in previous posts the 920 does require extra filtering both SSB and CW. I know INRAD has a double filter board which can be added as an extra for some $$$. I know ON4AOI has his FT920 fitted with this INRAD mod, in the meanwhile he bought a FTV1000 so he's well placed to give you a first hand impression. Bottom line is that the 28MHz RX behind whatever transvertor does the trick. The FTV1000 is just an excellent match to the MP I already had (and this MP has dual RX possibilities) :-)

Jeff, FWIW, using the normal antenna port relying on ALC action can be problematic. I used to own an IC-575, 275 and 475 all of which exhibited the same slow ALC action, ie; no matter where the power control was set there would be a spike of full-power at the antenna port before the ALC action came into effect. This spike although brief was enough upset my 2M tube amp. One solution was to use a T/R sequencer. Safer to mod the XVerter port, if you can.

Steve, I'm not that impressed with the FT-920 (altho I've worked a lot of countries with one). I have fitted a 250Hz filter, but very strong signals (for that read Ben, 5B4AGM) find their way round it. Also it takes a second or so to get up to power on six - but that's a fault that has developed recently.

Interesting reading about the FTV1000 and it does appeal to ones daydreams. FT1000MP plus FTV1000 what change left out of $1g? My old TS670 front end with Lunar PA50 preamp was the best basic RX I have ever used. The FT650 is noce but bad blanker, though now with TE systems preamp I am back up to hearing 51.740 at 800 kM. When tax return comes or super cheque may lash out with FTV1000 but while profit margins are so high in VK these things remain outa reach. Like ICPW1 no change out of 10,000 AUD.

Interesting discussion on the FTV1000, which I suspect is the closest we've ever gotten to the Holy Grail of 6m rigs (used w/1000mp or MKV); am I correct to assume this? I've been happy with my 1000mp/SSB LT6-S combo for a while now but am planning to try out the FTV sometime in the future. In the meantime, anyone know a good way to get more drive out of an MP's xvter output? I can only get about 14 watts (cw)from the LT6 with the low-level drive of the MP (should be able to get 20-25w out of LT6) I know DownEast Microwave makes a device that is controlled by the rig's alc so as to limit the hf power out to the xverter input--but is this the best way to go? It would make me nervous to run drive from the regular hf output into the xverter...Or should one try to boost the low-level drive instead with some sort of MMIC device? Any comments will be appreciated and I look forward to reading more on the FTV1000 or any other cominations that may be regarded as the "bees knees" of 6m gear. Incidentally, zero propagation/beacons into KH6 for over two weeks---seems like two months! Cheers & Aloha

Re: FTV-1000 -- I had receive problems related to channel 2 transmitter 50 km away. Replaced original unit with 2nd FTV-1000, and same problem. Returned it to Yaesu and they apparently did some tweeking which yielded significant improvement, although problem is not cured. I have a couple of other minor complaints, but in general it is a very nice system that worked well in the recent ARRL VHF contest. 73,

I'm so pleased with the FTV1000 that I have 2 of them. It outperforms previous rigs like : TS690S FT847 FT920 FT736 FT690RII, both on slectivity and sensitivity (the FT1000mp as 28Mhz rig has surely something to do with it..). Its good to know however to connect the FTV NOT according to the Yaesu instructions.. rather use the RX in jack on the FT1000mp or any other HF rig having it, to avoid the possibility of having 100w HF power presented to the 28mc output circuit of the transvertor. Steve, It has always been the case that you have had to watch what you say or print about an individual or company. The informal nature and ease of publishing via the internet, allied with net-izen's anonimity of email use, probably leads them to feel they can say what they like without recourse. Which is not the case, so long as the publisher of defamatory material can be traced. BTW, is that your script or did you lift it from a publication, if so did you first seek permission?? hi.

I think we have to watch what we say on the Internet as the following illustrates: An Internet marketing company is suing for $44,000 damages a man who went public with his angry protest over bulk unsolicited advertising email. The man, became so fed up with the so-called spam email clogging his computer that he placed the name of a company he believed responsible, xxx , on the Internet in protest. In a case that comes at a time of growing angst about spam email, xxx has taken action in the WA Supreme Court against Mr. McNicol. The lawsuit comes despite regulatory authorities across the world, including Australia, planning to help stem the tide of spam now clogging cyberspace. Mr. McNicol is alleged to have alerted an anti-spam action group which then blocked its email delivery system. The group, Spam Prevention Early Warning System -- or SPEWS last month allegedly spotted Mr. McNicol's internet whinge about xxx. SPEWS then used the internet protocol numbers for xxx posted by Mr McNicol and proceeded to block the company's email. The company alleged Mr. McNicol "procured, induced, incited, persuaded, encouraged, organized, facilitated and/or advised SPEWS" to block t3 Direct's emails. Through its lawsuit, xxx wants $20,000 to compensate for the 20 days income it will lose while awaiting a new Internet connection. The company also wants $14,000 to replace the blocked internet protocol numbers, $5000 for a new server and $4750 to cover the cost of technicians who set up an alternative mail delivery system. WOW!! WFWL??

Re: GW3MFY. There are a nr of fishy things about this event Bill. First, 6 m is not allocated in UA(any number)-land, but they might have a special permit (like UA0/G4DMA last cycle). Second, there appears to be no settlement in the given locator and it is more likely they would be located at a research station in LQ62. Third, most say the heading was about 060 deg which means the station was located further south than LP18. The distance JO21-LP18 is 2700 km and anyone knows that that is a tough one on Es, in between hops and despite that the signal was truely huge. Many questionmarks and few answers Bill, I count it for "real" but if it was ..... ?

Sunday, June 09 2002 at 20:52 (GMT)
Re: RA1OC. I am 100% sure that the signal did not come from KM or KO field, both are badly shielded by flats here and except ut5jaj I have never hrd a signal from either UA3 or UR above s6. There was no KO85 tv at that time, ruling the Moscow area out. My dead zone starts at qtf 060 deg to the south and on average the signalloss in that zone is at least 30 dB. The signal could have been EW, but unlikely with SP's calling him on Es. UA1 is the only option unless it originated from any of the Baltic states. At S9+20 there is no other way.

If anyone has any thoughts going to HI and take some radio equipment with him, here is the answer I got from Rafael HI8ROX via Jose EA7KW: "Michael, bad news. Better not to take any rig, they are caught at the customs and sometimes never gave back. The HI PTT is not giving reciprocal license to anyone, and has not even renewed the local licenses, in fact Rafael and the all others have not permission. So he recomends you take your girlfriend and enjoy the Caribbe." Sorry guys, no HI/PA3GST. At least someone will be happy.....:-(

Just for info: JX7SIX The present QTH is perfect for Eu. (Ground/Seagain, yagi, high power - 100W). The new beacon will be installed in IQ50rx, a muntaintop. Good for all directions, but only 10W RF & a dipole. Radiation angle will be low due to the steep mountaintop. The reason for using only 10W is limitations in the available mains supply plus lower risk of interfering with the VHF channels used by Jan Mayen radio.

Any 4m buffs may be interested in this posting found on the Uk 4m web page. Lets hope he gets lucky! Hi All As you may now 70 MHz is not permitted for hams in Sweden as the band is populated with a lot of comercial services. BUT I may have found a solution. The QRG 70.1375 MHz is for Testing and Demonstrating purposes according to the bandplan here in SM. So per today I have filed and application to conduct propagation studies on this QRG. We have now just to wait and see the outcome of this application. 73 de SM0TSC

What a great propagation during the Reg.1 test this weekend. Must be my best contest on six ever. Too bad some ops behave badly because you are 1 kc next to their frequency. Will not tell you the swearing they did, ohh boy! Anyway, y-day hrd from some PA's Mike, GU6AJE/mm was active from JM84 and he came back to several cq-ing over the band. I send out a mail to Mike and informed him about the great conditions y-day. I also informed him about the Reg.1 test and that he probably could give several a new grid on sunday....well did that happen or not. Got this from Mike this evening. >>>Hi Ray, wow, what a day..... Had Es on 6m for hours on end, a pile-up like I've never heard before (at least on the receiving end) and I guess I must have made over 200 qsos on 6m today. What's more, I also QSYed to 144MHz and made another 50 or more QSOs there, mostly to DL, PA and HB9. Wow! Logs later, because I was logging on paper - the computer is too difficult under those conditions.... Anyway, glad we finally made a couple of QSOs after all you've done! 73 Mike

Hi Steve, all. I ftped the 19Mb worth of VK9ML artwork to JA last week (25,000 cards are being printed in Japan). Hopefully the colour fold-out cards will be shipped back to Brisbane in the next few weeks so that we can start the outgoing process. FYI just spent two days replacing the RF deck on a Heathkit SB1000 which was shipped by road freight and dropped on the way. If you ship and amp with the tranny in and it gets dropped its possible damage will occurbeause of the assymetric weight distribution. Soeren, well done on 118 countries in 12 months. You should consider operating from Australia... it will take you 11-22 years to achieve that same goal providing you are retired and/or work from home, and, have a A1 grade station with lots of aluminium in the air in a favourable location. Many VK's will never get to 100 in their lifetime. Puts things into perspective, ehh? No wonder why VK's waiting on a return QSL (for a new one) value that expected card so much!
