After 10 years involvement in the UKSMG and 5 years of running the web site I set up in 1996, I have decided to take a break and will thus not be standing for the Committee in 2002. This means that we are looking for someone with the appropriate skills and interest to take over the management of the UKSMG web site. Enjoyed another brief (40 minutes) Es opening stateside this morning from KH6. Worked 31 stations from VE7, W7, W0, W6 and W5 areas with generally strong signal reports both ways. Also had a longer opening two days earlier that lasted over an hour and included Nova Scotia, Maine and New Hampshire while the West Coast boomed in at the same time. My move to BK29 has proved fruitful--8 DXCC (inc ZD7!), 16 states and over 50 grids worked in a little over a month of operating. Been using 5 el. at 28' with 180 watts so far, am now preparing to put up the 7JHV this week. Anyone I've recently worked needing a card from KH6 please note my new address (I've faxed it to the FCC and am waiting and waiting for it to be processed): Jeff Cathrow, KH6/KF6GYM, POB 884, Na'alehu, HI 96772 USA. Another tremendous day but not so many "new countries" worked today, Most a repeat of yesterday. Worked these: 9Y4AT, FM5AD, PJ2MI, J89I, YY5OIG, P49MR, P43JB, YV4DDK, KP2BH, 9Z4BM and heard CO8DM, CO2OJ, CO8LY, C6AGN, VP5VAC, FM5WD. Around 13,30z conds turned north and I worked almost 100 US-stns from W1,2,3,4,5,8,and 9 + VO2AC in FO73. Wish everyone a happy new year and let us hope the new year starts as good as the old ended

HAPPY NEW DX YEAR: Resolution should be don't all pile up on 106 with DU there might be dx behind it, in this case F4PAN you were in here for ten minutes 559. And I did say on N1RZ that seeing the XYL was putting on a turkey dinner the band would open, and it did just as I was clearing the scraps to the cat. it took 2 hours to get back inside and the icecream had melted. Does anyone know the velocity factor of CT100 75 ohm coax? I need to match a 6 metre quad element (approx 100 ohm) to 50 ohm coax and CT100 is the only 75 ohm coax in my "junk box". Most semi-air spaced coax tends to be about 80% but a more accurate figure would be useful. Thanks,

Sure it was memorable DX day 30/12/2001 ! HK CO HR TG and 6Y5RV 5 new now #187 Big signals from CO8LY 8DM 2OJ and ZF1RC 9+20 a level even locals do'nt bring.Finaly we could actual hear those DX that has been spotted so long...hi Heared some interesting signals from W5/0 S-dakota Minnesota etc but we where out of skip here they had pileups from OK /DL 59 so not workable Question why is 50.000 -50.020 never used for cw dxing? In my band plan this is a regular CW (dx) section below the beacon band. 73 Happy and healthy new year from snow (10") covered JO33

What a DX morning ! MUF reached TV channel R2 which is 59,25 MHz !! Also very very strong audio of several Kazachstan and Turkmenistan TV stations at 56.25 MHz all between 9 and 12 UTC. The MUF never reached that high in The Netherlands before.

Sure it was a fine day! Pity I had to stay with the visitors and family for two hours. But with another new country in the log it wasn't to bad. Didn't miss another new one. Getting Mohammad HZ1MD with S9 when I switch on the rig this morning. UK9AA had his ball. I think the best of the propagation was constantly east of me. But working TG9NX for a new one compensate everything. What is the best QSL route for TG9NX? Is his manager still N4FKZ? I heard different experiences. So what is a working route? Truly a day to remember - good start with UK9 HZ A45 RU4CE UN + loads of funny BS prop. Then WHAM! 1050Z - FY5KE 579 on back of beam! Not much to add to FJE:s wkd/hrd listing, except C6, 9Z, 8P9, TG9 and XE. Truly amazing signals from W and Carib. Funny to hear TI5KD at 59+ working scores of W5,6,7 and hearing BOTH ends of those QSO:s, with W:s at 51/52! 5 new ones 2day, nw #142 wkd. A fine day at the races here in SM. Just in case anybody wants to know what is possible with QRP 20 watts and 5 el yagi..... Today was a great day. This morning I heard UK9AA, HZ1MD, 5B4AGN but had to rush away and pick up my neighbours at the airport. But the afternoon was outstanding: FG5BG, FG5FR, FM5WD, WP4N, WP4U, WP4KJJ, WP4LUU, WP4LNY, NP2BT, KP3W, VP2VI, CO8DM, NP3GG, TI5KD, JA6WFM/HR3, CO8LY, TG9NX, C6AGN, YV1DIG, ZF1DC, ZF1RC, VP5VAC, CO2OJ worked and I heard YV4DDK, HK4SAN and XE1KK. Oh yes, stateside also came through W1,2,3,4,5,8,9,0 hrd/wrkd. As far as I can see in other reports I missed V44 and HP so lets hope for tomorrow

Hi all, It's amazing what difference a few miles makes! Wasn't up at 0840, so not sure if Mid East stations were in here, but 1000 onwards, good to UR5 (two new locs), RU4CE (new DXCC at last!) and the afternoon gave us NOTHING AT ALL until sunset, but then picked up some nice DX to USA. K0Yw (DM67) was only new grid and state (Colorado). Funny really, cos 28MHz was really hot all afternoon. Wonder if I can reach 400 squares worked by the end of the year - one day left, three squares short...... 73 & HNY

What a day!!! Came home at least two hours to late, but still managed to work a lot of U.S stations from the central part. Highlights were 4 new States: W0VD (EM27) from Montana, W5DB (DM82) and N6ZZ (DM73)from New Mexico, N0JK (EM17) from Kansas and finally W7CNK (EM15) from Oklahoma. Thank you all together with a pile of TX stations. Still waiting for the opening towards Carribeans, Central and South America. I wish you all the best, Happy New Year and a lot of fun on the "magic" band. It is really MAGIC!!!

Re David BRS 25429s earlier comments about the opening to east today I managed to work/hear JY,5B4,4X,RU4,UT,SV and OD5 along with SM,G,GM,LA,GW,DL,OH,PA and EI on backscatter in a snowy IO88KK. The afternoons opening however was not so strong with YV heard but again not worked!!!along with XE,W,and VE. Strange day again, only dawn and dusk openings here: at dawn massive signals from the Ukraine and Middle East (4X/5B/OD), then around 1200z loads of announcements from mainland Europe on the Cluster for big signals from the Caribbean but nothing here at all, the only signals in IO81 all afternoon were W5s and W0s around dusk (1630z) for some very welcome new grids. Quite amazing how the progagation changes from day-to-day, Happy New Year everyone and may 2002 bring even more DX.

Bo FJE re cards VK4VV hopeless, owes a heap to USA, sent saes incl VK saes same goes for VK8RH, they take the $$ and dead silence. Try the pseudo VK4 spokesperson here he always is on soapboax maybe he can put efforts into shaming some in VK4 into sending out some QSL cards like magic. Re VK8MS he has cards being printed and family situation and work situation meant little time for the courtesies until recently. HNY see you on 6 soon.

Hi everyone. Nobody yet seems to have mentioned the excellent conditions to the Middle East and beyond this morning. Perhaps you were all asleep! I was very pleased to hear HZ1MD at 08.40z followed by S9 sigs from JY, OD5, 4X and 5B4. Side scatter signals were very pronounced from Scandanavian countries - ES, OZ, LA, SM and OH. Also heard EH1, EI and GW. So a very interesting hour before I had to go QRT. Well, 2002 is very near us so may I wish all 6m Dxers an eventful and happy New Year. And may I add my thanks to the UKSMG Committee for all their hard work in 2001. I know they only seem like names and callsigns on paper. How to contact DXsummit?? Today I sent a mail to the address give (dxsummit@usa.net). Message I got back was: User has cancelled account. My quesion to them was about their Spot Database: "I notice that when using the spot database to get the last 1000 spots on 6m, several spots are suppressed. E.g. today I did not get the 6m spots from UA0SC at 0918 and 0938, and at 0310 JR6HI spotting UA0SC. My impression is that you only give a summary and I get only every second spot. SE Europe to NA path: Watch for paths between 1730-1830 UTC. These have been productive over the last few days and may be due to Es linkage. Today, this path produced four YT1, two 9A QSOs and a long haul contact with 5B4FL. Happy New Year to all and good (6m) DX...

A happy new year to all. As a newcomer to Six this year, am impressed by the high standard of operating, and the fast QSL returns. Especially return-of-post Xmas presents from the managers for JY4NE and OD5/OK1MU. It was great on 26 December to listen to the big signals from FY5KE PZ5RA D44TD 9Z4BM FM1DQ YV5DDK and PY8MU. Oh, by the way, if Six is a weak signal band, why do most of the DX stations use SSB? - 73 and good hunting.

You have a point Brian. However, let’s keep .110 because it’s nice to have a frequency where you know all the locals can have a chat, tune their microphone amplifier(??!??) or whatever. This makes the rest of the band nice and clean and fit for DX traffic! I find it much more frustrating when the “big guns” have to exchange grids, names and seasons greatings with the DX. With the limited time we far behind “the 59+ European curtain” have, we cannot afford this luxury! A HAPPY NEW YEAR to all 6ers!

Re. 50.110 etc. Is it not time 6m was reorganised as a normal HF dx band? We waste the best 100 kc/s or most of it. As far as the beacons are concerned we can operated amongst them if they must remain in present places. After all only one or two seem to be heard at any one time - No more 110's!

Re 110. It's a bit like firearms, motor-cars and alcohol if it's used properly it's fine. I believe we should keep a calling channel but keep trying to educate everyone in its correct use. My reason is simply that considering most of the cycle, for some 98% of time 50MHz is not too lively, to say the least. I am not going to tune white noise continuously, however I will leave an RX sitting on one frequency. Scanners are not too successful I find as the number of noise sources increase. BUT I agree let's try not to encourage the running of pile-ups on 110. But do any of those who use the frequency in such a manner read this page or any other amateur radio information system? I don't think so! Perhaps a nice polite letter from the committee of the UKSMG might achieve something. Any views? HNY

Using 110 for getting attention and QSYing works, using 110 for QSOs doesn't. There has been complete chaos for the last few days with multiple pileups taking place on 110 with many guys calling one station but with another coming back! At one point FM1DQ, KP4HX were both s9+ running QSOs at the same time - with YV4DDK in the background! Maybe these circumstances is a reason why we SHOULD use the callsign of the station you are calling once you have been heard? Chris

Another good opening on 6m today. I turned the radio on and heard a couple of GI stations really strong so I went to .110 and called 'CQ CQ CQ ZF1DC ZF1DC calling CQ and standing by'. The response I got was an MM0 station coming back saying get off the international DX calling freq! I responded with 'did you get my call'? I suggest he get the wool out of his ears pick up a DXCC listing and see where ZF is! I think that I qualify in Europe as DX! Europe is certainly DX to me and to everyone else in the Caribbean! Needless to say once I make a few contacts with Eu on .110 I QSY up the band to a clear freq as others can attest to. Anyway to hell with him! I worked many EI, G, GM, GI, stations as well as LA, and SM. The signals were super strong today peaking over 59 at times. Hoping for more of the same tmw. 73's

the band was in terrific shape today. It started with W1,2's and also W4's on scatter path we were all beaming to Eu and working each other with no signals direct, also a KP4 popped in for a minute. Then the prop moved north into VE1 and VO1 on F2. At 15Z I worked VO2AC for my first Zone 2 contact. Very pleased with that after hearing VE8 and OX beacons almost daily but not many operators on when heard. The band then made its way across southern Canada to the PNW. It then moved to the south eastern US then onto the Eastern Caribbean on E-skip. I did manage to work FG5FR for a new one. Then worked FG5BG also. It is funny how that happens I have been stalking them for months then I work two in one day. Thanks guys! The band then changed to include Central America. Finally after sundown the band moved north into the southwest of the US and Mexico on E-skip and PY, LU and CE on TEP. Amazing the band stayed open for 14 hours today with only minor closures of 20mins at a time. In all the band was open for at least 13 hours today. I managed to work CE, FG, FM, KP4, P4, PY, PZ, TG, TI, VE1,2,3,4,5,6,7,(heard VE8),9, VO1,2, W1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0, XE, and YV. Also heard LU and PY0FF beacon. Still no KL7 though :-( Amazing day! To top it off saw on the clusters that I was heard in EU this morning! Hope for more of the same tomorrow. 73's

One new grid over the Christmas break.. oh well better than nothing! Christmas day peaked at 42degrees C... so spent time looking for cooler locations (inside the shack was 36C). Congrat's to the VK3's for the EU contacts they must have snatched from beneath the VK to VK contacts. Heaps of domestic E propagation filling the DX window... heard KB5??? weakly yesterday morning, but smothered by VK's on Es.

From 0845z to 0930z band open to QF12,22,21,31 with VK3ATQ,AMZ,AMK,BQS, et al working into several Eu countries. ZL3 to VK6 path existed at same time. Signs were there from 0500z last station heard was ON4GG. We need to start earlier, spread out more and liase by all available means to make the short openings effective. It is 13 years since VK3 to OH2 to the letter.

Good day on six today worked FY5KE (GJ35) for new country, along with PZ5RA (GJ25) on LSB also for a new country then came KP4FRE (fk68), WP4Q(fk78), KP2BH(FK77), KP4EIT(fk68), and WP4LNY(fk68).To my surprise YV1DIG(fk41) answered my cq which was also a new country.At 14.06 XJ1TJM came up on the band for a new square (GN08).Thanks mr sun, and 6 is still open at the moment to the states.Lets hope it continues Merry christmas to everyone and a happy new year. 73's Daniel

FY5KE worked here too. Also PZ5RA was 59 (50120 in LSB) for 20 minutes. Too much pileup to get through though. I am ashamed to say that a Finnish operator annoyed him by calling over QSOs. It waisted precious time from the opening, which could have given somebody a new country.

FG5BG was extreme strong on 50110 allmost splattering 59+20 FM5WD worked again after long time (1989) and FM5AD No new one's here.. went out to do some icescating (in the hall) after the band seemed to go down. So missed the HR ?? or maybe HR was only into the south and not into JO33 ?? will there be another change... It can take 10 years... as we know. 73 happy hollidays.

A reminder to DX stations not to use numbers (1,2,3 etc)to manage a pile up on 6m. The propagation (F2 or Es) is too short lived unlike HF. Please use split frequency operation. For example, I certainly missed out on a new one to day as a result. Not a gripe however, you guys in rare Grids/countries deserve all our thanks. Keep up the good work in 2002. Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Sixers! What a day today. 2 new DXCC is what had Santa for me today. Will he come again tomorrow? At least it was a remarkeble day. Missed FM in cycle 22 and during the last big Caribean opening. This afternoon really had to work for it. But got FM5WD. After the contact tuned a little lower and found FM5AD CQing. Had an interesting QRP mobile QSO with OX3FV today. I was mobile in grid square EM08 and heard Kim calling CQ on 50.098. Called and he answered. I was running a IC-706, but output only about 10 watts due to voltage drop. Antenna is a 1/4 wave whip. Kim runs a FT-817 to a whip antenna. Q5 QSO "whip to whip!"

Very strange conditions here today in io88kk . I managed to work 16 VEs and Ws in a 40 minute period this afternoon, I was giving genuine 59 reports but was getting back 55 or 53 also I had a noise level up to 55 which is unusual in this QTH (Wick).10 metres was behaving in the same way which made me feel a little better. Ive managed to write and send almost all of my QSL cards for my DX contacts this autumn about 450!!!!! Any way seasons greetings and a happy Hogmanay from Northern Scotland Don MM5AJW

Re: Peter's question about IRC's from the U.S. - The USPS raised the cost of IRCs a while back (to $1.75 I think), but according to my local post office they did not have a ready supply reflecting the new rate. The solution they came up with was to add postage stamps to existing IRCs, mine was to quit using them & send a greenstamp instead. CU3URA/b into fm18 most mornings early - usually for at least 10-15 minutes somewhere between 1300-1400z. Please check African scatter path occassionally during this period -have worked as far as LZ & OH that way in the last month.

For future reference I can inform you that Christmas tree lights hung around my two 6M beams and a 20M monobander causes the v.s.w.r. to increase but not significantly. 2X 5 ELE TONNA . stack at 3m apart for cleanest h-plane pattern without vertical lobes , you can go to 4.5m apart without suffering excessive vertical lobes , gain increase of between 1.4 and 2db respectively . phasing harness/splitter = 2x 2811mm lengths of RG11AU [.66 vel factor] 75ohm coax [multi strand centre conductor if possible ] for short spacing , and 2x 4950mm for wider spacing [ gives 50ohms @ 50.125mhz centre freq , into 50ohm loads ] .this would give around 9 to 9.5dbd total gain .OZ6OM matt uses 2x 5 ele tonnas stacked for his NAC contest station .

What a tremendous thrill to work Bruce, ZD7VC yesterday morning (2053z 18 Dec)as he was calling "CQ Hawaii/North America." His signals were between 5x3 and 5x5 at my new qth (BK29eb, 1,300'asl)and this event marked my 4th While probably a TEP/F2 link (1my best DX--16,811 km.),he was in fairly steady for almost an hour! I called KH6SX on the phone to alert him and Art then worked him from his location. on Kilauea volcano (4,100' asl)with 3 elements. Magic Band, indeed!

For what its worth, I reckon the humble 5 ele tonna does a great job. It does need a choke balun but a few turns of coax works fine. I worked 103 countries up to 1991 with a tonna at just 30' (about 9 metres) and that was in the days when there were far fewer countries available than there are now. If you consider ALL the factors - price, size, weight, front-to-back ratio etc - the tonna represents a very reasonable compromise. 73,

I am now getting IRC's coming with cards from the USA with stamps to the value of 70 cents stuck on the left hand side and franked over them, sometimes the stamp is on the reverse side. I always thought an IRC covered airmail postage to any part of the world. It only requires one IRC to send up to 3 cards in one envelope from here to the states. Any explanation please.

Back home after a week in VE2. Met VE2DFO and had a nice visit with one of Canada's top 6m DX-ers. Worked a few EU's and West Coast from the mobile enroute through some lesser worked VE9 and VE2 grids. Today band was awful (of course-I'm back home). Heard the XE1/G3SVD keyer for a while. Suggest the text is changed to "XE1/G3SVD/B" (instead of CQ CQ) as I called it over and over and over on 50.103. No way to tell there wasn't anyone there until I just got fed up. Made it to 5NN at the same time EU was in off the back. Wouldn't be surprived if a XE1-EU QSo could have been made.....you getting all this Andy? (hi hi!) 73 es GL DX. - Mike

Daniel, have you tried GcmWin? It makes great circle maps and you can vary the distance from the center so the maps can go from 100km radius out to 20000km. Look at http://hem.passagen.se/sm3gsj/gcm.htm and follow the link. You can set the origin anywhere so you can make maps for any country you choose.

I have just moved my http://n1rz.org/ website to http://6m.dxers.info/ Most of what worked on the old site will continue to work on the new. Accept you'll need to set new cookies. There will be no more live data stored at the old site. So please move to the new site asap. I'm working on converting the entire site to a better format, and that should be happening in the next month or so. Looking forward to the 9G QSL Arliss/Dick, when ever it comes. Any team that can put out a QSL and process the incoming cards for 1000s of QSOs in under 3-4 months should be congratulated. Those who think this is too long should mount a DXpedition themselves, then they might understandm the time factors and work involved?

Hi all, Just to add to Arliss' comments on our QSL card; the card is a 4-page affair with a fair number of pictures and some charts etc., so there has been some back and forth with the printer/graphics illustrators. I'm going as fast as I can, and expect the end result to be worthy of your continued patience. I think we are about a week to ten days from having them, so please hang in. Arliss brings up a good point. I think that stations should wait a minimum of 3 months before they ask if the QSL card has been rec'd. At a minimum it takes 2 weeks for the cards to arrive and another 2 weeks for the reply to get back plus some time to get to the card. So that adds up to at least one and a half months. Plus if the stack is big or other things come up (God forbid) then we arrive at 3 months. While we all try to qsl ASAP it does take time when you receive 100's and 100's of qsls. All that answering those emails asking if the qsls have been rec'd does is take up valuable time that could be spent RESPONDING TO QSL's. So if you must ask please include QSO time date and callsign. 9G5AN QSL info: we are awaiting return of our cards from the printer. They will be sent out ASAP once the printer delivers the cards. I mention this since I am starting to receive inquiries to the effect of "where is my QSL card?" While I can understand some impatience, I would like to make the general suggestion that when you ask a DX station if you are in the log, or if your cards have been received, please take the time to include when the QSO occurred. Also, don't forget to include your callsign (that may seem obvious, but I've received several messages asking me if they are in the log, but don't tell me the date or their call). 73,

Hi friends. After the super fine opening on dec 12th I thought we might have an opwening a day later, dec 13th. While setting up the antenna it began to snow. After abt 2 hrs I was in a heavy snow storm, pract no visibilty and temp dropt down to -10° C. I decided to qrt without one single qso...! Then back home on completely iced roads and heavy snow showers. What a flop....¨From my side there will be no HB0-exped anymore until next spring. Nevertheless.... good DX.

TI9M Cocos Island DX'pedition 17 Feb - 4 Mar: I will be participating in the TI9M expedition with my focus being 50MHz. We will operate a keyer on 50.102 with a 15 second break between sending. If conditions get good I'll run SSB on 50.145. Will have a 6 ele yagi, IC706, and ACOM amp when needed. Since some have asked what the QSO totals were for the 9G5AN 6m DXpedition, here they are: unique CW calls worked: 1298; unique SSB calls worked: 1598. Sorry, but I don't have the figures for how many stations were worked on both CW and SSB. We worked 84 countries total for both modes. I know that there are many ops in Europe that run WSJT software on FSK441. Are their any ops running the new version 1.5.4 with JT43 on it? This experimental mode has been used with great success here and I really think it would work on extremely weak DX openings on 6 meters! A famous politician once said when the channeltunnel between France and England was opened, 'Now the rest of europe is not isolated anymore from the UK'. Yesterday I was on 50.170 working a huge pileup of mostly UK. 50 Gs were worked in this one pileup! Every once in a while I would ask for a break for other areas and folks very kindly stood by. At one point I said "QRZ Mainland Europe only please" to which a single strong G responded with his call. When I asked if he was on mainland Europe the response was "Mainland England"! 73 & good DX...

Dunno if we're getting some sort of greyline enhancement but for the past week or so condx to the US have been at their best around our dusk, 1530-1630z. From here it sounds like a lot of UK stations have given up by then if there's been nothing on earlier - don't, condx on Sat and Thurs were excellent into W8/9 around this time (and probably the rest of the week but I was at work).

Ole, OX3OX did a great job running a large pileup to North America today. Unusual to hear OX after 1900 utc, and qso with Ole at 1941 utc with my indoor dipole from home. Ole said many of the callers were dupes. Please... if you have already worked a DX station and hear a pile calling him/her - QRX and let those who need the new country have a shot.

I know it was a while ago, just catching up on my QSLing, but did anyone work out exactly which D44 station was S9++ in the UK on 30th Oct, D44TC or D44TD (or both)? Unfortunately I sat listening to him for about 45 minutes and no callsign was given, just the usual 'QRZ',I thought when I worked him he said D44TD but didn't use phonetics so I don't know whether it was a C or a D.

Whew...great day on 6m. OD5/OK1MU called me with 559 rst for my #100 dxcc. Then about 15min. later I worked HB0/HB9QQ. 101 dxcc in USA in 404 days ;-) You won't hear me complaining about this cycle ;-) 50 WAS, and 619 Grids. I'm a happy man. Good Evening All: Years ago I got a grid map of Europe centered on JN/JO grid blocks. I think it came through KA3B's 6 mtr newsletter. It is 81/2" x 11" in size, and fits into a plastic binder cover. RE CQing: I certainly agree with the benefits but there are also problems associated with the technique- if it is carried too far. Specifically, causing huge QRM if you call endless CQs. Some stations on this end put out continuous CQs from 12-16Z whether they are getting answers or not. With the selectivity of propagation (sometimes), this can ruin other's chances of hearing anything weak. So, let me add something re: CQing: If the CQs are unproductive, after a reasonable amount of time- take a break, tune around, see what's going on and see what others are working. Then get back to it! Best DX de Bob...

Art and other mid west and west coast NA stations. I have to agree with Neil, the amateur population density in EU is far greater than in NA.I think that many EU openings go un-noticed for you guys because you don't call CQ.The East coast stations have realised the advantage of this technique and they reap the benefits daily.The propagation can move around very rapidly and if you call CQ I am quite sure that both your QSO rate and DXCC score will increase accordingly. What is happening at the moment is that you are working the same west coast UK stations again and again because they are the ones in a position to call CQ and they are loud.Try it fellas I am sure that we will all benefit. 73

Art, we have a different problem this side. With "so many" of us in each grid, it isnt always easy to sit there cqing for an hour or two. "We" need more of you guys to pick a frequency, spot yourself and call. Its been very noticeable to me this season the lack of stations that seem to be cqing from "the mid west to west coast". I dont enjoy CQing but have had to do it to work virtually anything of interest. A good example is having worked 14 different W6 stations now, Ive still yet to hear one calling CQ!

All EU stations When looking for The N.W. states (OR WA ID etc) Please call Cq on a frequency away from the QRM, between 50.100 and 50.125 is almost usless out here because of the normal QRM of 20 over 9 W1,2,3 and VE stations. Signals are normanly weak and openings short lived. Post your QRG on DX summit or Prop logger and we will look for you. There are a lot more of you guys than us, most of the W stations are at work. I know this is slightly off topic but I'm after some advice . I'm looking to replace our TV and looking for a 24" max screen ( widescreen preferred if possible ). Correction >> The "3,011 6M QSOs" reported for HC8N earlier included some dupes, the "audited" log numbers look closer to 2,700 QSOs. The final numbers will be posted on the HC8N site. More important is how many ops worked HC8N for a "new one" on 6M. We did well working into Europe and Asia.

This morning I worked EW2MWO on CW for (hopefully) a new and rare one. Mick (W1JJM) worked this same station back on I think 18 November. So far I have been unable to find a qsl route. I realize that 3 letter suffixes in EW are probably rare. Signal characteristics included Polar Flutter and there was prop to that general area at the time (an LY was calling- buried in others calling). If anyone knows more about this station & QSL route- It would be greatly appreciated. TNX & 73...

Received a comment regarding the HC8N and 9G5AN 6M QSO totals: "9G5AN reported 'about 3200 QSOs in 84 countries'. Not the "final audited report." The HC8N QSO total of 3,011 is the duped, unique QSO total. Are 9G5AN's "3200 QSOs" duped uniques or the raw total? The HC8N "raw total" is close to 4,000!

I want to clarify my recent posting -- what gets my goat is the guys who day after day will break a pileup to work me. 6m F2 propagation is a precious resource and I want to use it to work new stations/grids/DXCC countries. I don't mind when a DX friend will stop by and give me a report when I've called a string of unanswered 6m CQs--just nice to know the band is still open under those circumstances. I also appreciate seeing myself posted on the DX European PacketClusters when I am calling CQ. Bill

The 3,011 HC8N 6M QSOs is likely the all time record for a 6M DXpedition. And done with a TS-690 at 50 watts to a 6M7JHV yagi. HC8N QSLs via AA5BT, HC8/N0JK to me. Tnx all for the QSOs!

Darrell openings in November (last month) were SP 0740z, I 0840Z, EH3 0950z, last Feb 5B4 1000z. We are hearing 48MHz TV 0700 - 1000z. Most likely months are around the equinox, November and February perhaps best, but we don't really know. By monitoring 45MHz TV carriers you can judge for yourself what are the most likely times. That is why we need EU feedback to tell us what is being heard over there so that we can be more alert at those times.

Transpolar SP Kl7/Eu. - yep well we have a lot (about 10) very very keen bods over here in BP51/41 who would love to work just east of the Pole to Eu - It is a rough path crossing the Au Oval but I know it will work one day - we have been heard on the Long Path into Eu during JA openings (skewed). Historically speaking paths exist from Northern VE8 (83n 74w) into Eu a lot of Nights and also UA0 (80n 90e) into Eu too - I worked from these locations in 1986-1990 - a double one of those would do it - only trouble is that the sigs have to pass further into what I call the chaotic area - suffice to say listen to my signals on HF in Eu even on a good day - I sound like Im talking 10 ft under water - We are hear and beaming and calling - its a matter of time -.. Openings from VE8 and UAO happened during the harang discontinuity period of a weak Au - too many protons and we were scuppered. DL3YBP also heard us on 144Mhz from VE8 (ward Hunt Island)too - but not both way completion - this was just prior to the March 1989 big Au event - Cheers Flo/Laurence G4DMA/KL7

Bob, most of us in Eu would love to work, or even hear, ZL on 6m - what time of day were the openings last year? We've had VK video/VK6RSX beacon into the UK on many days for the past 5 or 6 weeks around 1000z, is this the best time to look for ZL?

Anyone out there want to work ZL? There were several short path ZL-EU openings in November and the past few days there have been promising indicators. However yesterday with good 48/49 MHz TV carriers here, there was no apparent interest from EU. Are people looking for the ZL TV carriers and if you are, please tell us when you hear them. ZL TV transmitters have vision carriers on frequencies nominally 45.24, 45.25, 45.26MHZ, there are also others offset from those by 400Hz, hence 45.239.6 etc. Their power output is from a few watts up to 100kW erp and are all on 24 hours per day. Their FM sound carriers are 5.5MHz higher. If you hear these then the band is REALLY open. Be careful though, it is possible to hear spuris from 55.25MHz transmitters on 50.75 - you will almost always hear the corresponding carrier on 45MHz if it is from ZL. Because the TV prevents many ZLs from getting on 6m, there is only a handful of active ZLs on 6m. We really do want to work you guys but we need your feedback.

May I draw the attention of some posters to the DX Cluster. You can post a 'Spot' there of a DX station heard or worked, which will be seen instantly by most Eu, and many other, 6m ops. A remark here will probably not be seen until it is out of date. The DX Cluster can be accessed on the internet by TELNET, download and install DXTELNET. I worked about 100 UK (G, GW, GI, GM) stations today on 6m by calling CQ DX on SSB & CW. About 80% of the QSOs were stations working me for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th time in the last five weeks on the same band + mode. During these openings I would like to work some new grids and DXCC counters--so why am I working the same guys in, say, IO91 over and over?

Almost forgot! Today for a short time when the GM/GW stns were quite loud I was on 50.195 and also listening on 70.195 for a crossband QSO. I never heard anything, but will be trying agn tmw if the "G's" get loud! Last X-band QSO across the pond (AFAIK) was in the late 70's/early 80's with VE1ASJ (now VE9DX). Isn't it about time for another??? Thanks!

I believe the KL7--EU path CAN be cracked. It's come close with several events of OH/LA into W7/VE7. I also am a firm believer that there is propagation from here in VE1/9 to the far far north around midday when we see the GM/TF/VE8 reports into W0 and W7. Where the other end of my path might be, I am just not certain. Russia? North Pole? Northern tip of Greenland? It's anyone's guess, but if you look at the geometry, you can see it's there. Long live 6 Meters! We need more remote stations with a 6m rig! Who would have ever guessed there was sooooo much propagation from EU, W7 and even SA to the VE8BY/B in FP53rs? (No one unless that lonely ol beacon was there........) where else do we have propagation to and don't know it? Hmmm

we have all heard of "TEP". We all know someone with"SAD", and a few folk live with "PMT",OUCH!!. NOW! (not allota people know this). Its called "TPP". Transpolar propagation. Or as my psychiatrist recently told me " The inane wish to work KL7 on six metres ".I cancelled my next session and will continue to monitor 50.110 from 2000 hrs GMT beaming North along the meridean until my XYL tells me different, Bless her!. If its not done this year I will be picking up my pension next cycle. Or maybe, just picking up a cycle!!!

Dear David: Thanks for the QSO/QSL on this Autumn. I met you in Lp and heard again in Sp! Solar cycle 22 peaked at Apr. 1989 and appeared to be twin peaks. In my 1992 log many W5-W0s and VEs on Jan. OH, DJ, 9H, PA, ON, OK, GM (via Sc) on Feb. and P43, PJ, YV, CU and CT3 (Lp) on Mar. We enjoyed good condx throughout 1992 but the condx obviously declined in 1993. An average period of a solar cycle is 10.7 years (10 years + 8 month). If you add this to 1992, you can simply forecast that 2002 is fully OK and first half of 2003 is also OK -- Hope. FB DX.
